IÂ’m fascinated with the idea of art as a part of a wider system of meaning, one that points to itself as holding the secret of truth external to art. As I can not really believe any such meaning, yet unable to accept this inability, I create for myself works that seem to belong to a hidden coherent system.
I frequently use what can be called “psychological warfare” tactics: things are never what they seem, and use veils of artistic manipulations to allude to themselves as holding a secret truth that should – but never could – be deciphered. These manipulations are often readily exposed as what they are, only to reveal that the works still hold power and attraction, despite the exposure of the manipulations that seemingly supported them. Without this support the artwork implodes, only to allow meaning to reemerge out of the artistic action itself.
