Sonje Hibbert is a ceramic artist whose genre is influenced by extensive living and travelling abroad. Working with issues and concerns of the contemporary world, the current aspect of her figurative work fuses a fascination of Eastern and African Cultures with more traditional W. European styles. The sensual figurative sculptures, whilst being tactile and often humorous, on a more serious note attempt to portray the clichés that surround the Western perceptions of the female form. These sculptures are exhibited and sold nationally in galleries and ceramic fairs throughout the UK.

Sonje also explores methods of depicting the unspoken concerns relating to the human condition. A recent context deals with the aftermath of modern day conflicts and genocide, essentially influenced by the on going troubles in Iraq. The installation series called “Portraying the Silence”, has become a springboard for exploration into this sensitive and challenging arena, and enabling the practice to move beyond the more commercial sculptures. In doing so a discourse appertaining to the artists’ role, in relation to modern day conflicts and crimes against humanity, is being addressed. This has been facilitated by a recent visit to Auschwitz - Berkenhau during a nine month residency in Bath.

Along side the ceramic work also runs a strong interest in photography, drawing and painting. A long-standing engagement with the landscape has produced large paintings and collage which in turn is valuable source material for future sculptural work.

Clay making utilises plaster moulds with press moulding or slip casting used for resolving the final work. A variety of finishes are used including porcelain slips, transfers, smoke firing and raku.
