In the 1930s, the German critic Walter Benjamin amassed a huge archive of material related to the shopping arcades of Paris. This city stood for him as the epitome of Modernity, in its urban plan, its mass-produced consumer goods, but most especially in its architecture. I am interested in this relationship between architecture and history. By creating typologies of architectural structures I hope to invoke not simply a form of archival documentation but a dialectical method of re-interpreting history. Thus many periods and styles are juxtaposed, not in a random fashion, but according to existing geographical relationships.
My interest in Western Canadian architecture stems from early colonial land divisions. Despite the variegated influx of immigrants, and with total disregard for local populations and geographies, a homogeneous rural land use system was developed. Space was set aside for farmland, schools, churches; just as, in the contemporary city, land is zoned for commercial, residential, or institutional use. My paintings follow these divisions, starting with skyscrapers and their antecedents. Other series to follow will depict churches, schools, hospitals, and houses. |

Citadel
2004-5 Acrylic on canvas 91x61 cm |
|
This is a scene from downtown Edmonton. I was really more interested in the Century plaza behind, but the orange and blue made a nice contrast. This work was featured in 2006 at the Richmond Art Gallery. |
West From Westin
2005 Acrylic on canvas 91x61 cm |
|
Another scene from Edmonton, featuring the famous MacLeod building in front. This is the sort of image that sums up all my work as it depicts a wide variety of coexisting periods/styles. |
Bridge #24
1999/2003 Acrylic on canvas 137x91 cm |
|
Originally conducted as a flat-color, hard-edge painting, This piece was reworked a few years later in a more realistic style. It depicts a small section of the Burrard bridge in Vancouver. |
Gordon #2
1995 Acrylic on canvas 183x123cm |
|
The main image depicts a close-up of a "Gordon" brand platen printing press. The pictogram figures are varnished and the machine image is airbrushed on top. |
Bridge #25
1999 Acrylic on canvas 183x123cm |
|
This is the Stony Trail bridge in northeast Calgary. It was airlifted in place by helicopter so as not to create undue destruction in the massive ravine below. The painting is done entirely in flat colors without any gradation. |
Factory #4
2000 Acrylic on canvas 183x91cm |
|
This is an acrylic painting in flat colors mimicking the look of silkscreen. |
Bridge #34
2002 76x102cm |
|
This is an image of Lion's Gate bridge in Vancouver, doubled and rotated to provide an ambiguous perspective. |
Bridge #14
1998 183x91cm |
|
A flat-color painting of a night scene beneath Calgary's Centre Street bridge. |
