statement
By creating landmarks, I try to catch the spectator’s attention for a hidden layer of meaning to a landscape. These layers can question the history of civilization.
Or are about the way the earth crust grows and vanish. My personal involvement leads me from one track to another from my home grounds near the beach of The Netherlands [ series ‘home ground ] , to the Silk-route, Mesopotamia ...in search of the source of our civilization [ series ‘search out’ ]...to Japan , Iceland and Tenerife to walk on volcanic surface.
Wondering how on earth this ever happened and how long it will last... [series ‘…a whole hole swallow up all…’]

Valley of Alamut II
2006 digital print on matt paper edition 5 80x110cm |
|
In these photographs you can see the series that I made during a journey through Iran, in search for the beginning of “our” civilization, I therefore have photographed landscapes where history was made. The mountains where I photographed “Valley of Alamut” were once the territory of the Assacijnen. The English word assassin comes from them so this does not say a lot for their practices. The routes of Kings run through the country, used yearly by Darius and his courtiers. He traveled three different routes. Skies, and figures from Persian paintings, point to their knowledge of both Chinese and Flemish paintings. Iran was on the crossroads of east and west at the time of the silk route, when not only goods but knowledge was exchanged. Open source. There is not a lot in the landscapes that gives any indication of this history, I have therefore placed “landmarks” to make these places special.
The photos are all printed on fine mat paper; giclee prints with archive ink a series of 5

In this series the fragility of the earth’s crust is the central point, that wafer thin skin that we walk on. Volcanoes that spit molten lava and gasses into our atmosphere. They form a bridge between the molten mass on earth and the heavenly arches. Standing on the beginning of the universe and (maybe) responsible for the great (climate) change. I am fascinated by these magnificent Phenomena. I have searched for them in Japan, (ring of Fire) Iceland, and the Canary Islands.
The objects are made of glass for glass is nothing more then very special 'soil'.
Prints in this series are printed on German etching paper, just 5 in a series
