1 Park Ave. North
2004 Full-scale multi-media interactive streetscapes |
|
At the corner of Park Avenue North and West Haywood Street, this whimsical Arts and Crafts home is the "Gateway to Chicken Hill." It was originally built in 1949 and served as a home in one end and a neighborhood grocery store in the other. The building changed hands several times over the years. In 2004 Whit Rylee and his design team, reinterpreted and renovated the house to bring it in line with the historic character of the neighborhood. It was sold to the present owners in May of 2005. The very unique floor plan is quite creative and flexible as several of the rooms could easily be utilized for different functions. The charming pebble dash stucco exterior is adorned with Glasgow Rose tile inlays based on an 1890s design by Scotland's Charles Renee Macintosh. |
Bianca's Palace

Located at 48 Roberts Street in the Chicken Hill Co-Operative, Bianca's Palace is an "Industrial Gothic" home. Based upon very traditional architecture, what makes this home Industrial is the detailwork which is made of metal instead of wood. For example, the Oriole windows are made of steel and copper with backlit stained glass. The exterior is smooth cast stucco. This design is very much inspired by the architectural drawings of S. H. Brooks in Designs for Cottage and Villa Architecture. |

Whit is a self taught designer with a background in historic preservation. Born in Sarasota, Florida, his family was an early "Pioneer" in the downtown revival, purchasing 3 condemned buildings in the 1970's while he was a child.
At the age of 18 he began writing about Sarasota history and then a few years later working as a consultant for people restoring historic structures. Numerous projects that he worked on at that time received local preservation awards.
While in Florida Whit saw Aundres Duany speak at New College and was exposed for the first time to the New Urbanist movement. Duany’s style railed against many of the same issues perpetuated by the standard zoning codes that stymied his work in Sarasota. This was namely the city's insistence that old buildings and new building in old neighborhoods conform to some code that was designed for Suburban Sprawl and had no relationship to the quaint little coastal town.
Since that time Whit has moved to encouraging New Urbanist development and sat on the Smart Growth Board in Asheville and on the City of Asheville's ad hoc Traditional Development Committee. On the steering committee for the West End Clingman Area Neighborhood planning charrette, Whit was one of the members who successfully fought for the hiring of the New Urbanist firm Correa Valle Valle. His work reflects commitment to Urbanist philosophies and focuses on high density urban infill with a strong street prescience.
The detailing and massing of his designs are obviously influenced in part by the Victorian predecessors; however other influences are also there. These include such modern and whimsical story tellers and artists as Dr. Suess, Tim Burton (Edward Scissorhands, Nightmare Before Christmas, and especially the original "Batman" movie), and Edward Gorey (“The Gashleycrumb Tinies”.)
