| 关于此艺术家 |
Since graduating from Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona, Spain in 2005, Mille Kalsmose has moved to Denmark and now works as an artist in Copenhagen.
The artistic viewpoint of Mille Kalsmose consists of two parallel worlds – the abstract and imaginative, together with the reflective and real world. The artworks are expressed in a simple and distinct aesthetic language, in series where she blurs boundaries between the reality of autobiographical memory and imagination.
Her work is staged as an enquiry of what it is - actions, decisions, history, a moment in time - that makes us ourselves. Her work is conceptual, but also grounded in process, as her every day life has a direct influence on her artworks. In this sense Mille’ s work is autobiographical: the artworks and reality are intimately connected in the process of creation.
In the Summer 2007 she traveled to Tokyo, Japan with the documentary film director Suvi Andrea Helminen, on a grant from the Danish Film Directors Committee, to work on their common film project “Finding Way”. The film is about questioning identity, about ways of perceiving oneself and the possibilities and barriers involved in redefining oneself, and is still in progress.
Another project which is also taking shape is a computer program with programmer Leif Skov. The project is about swapping lives, and questioning how choices influence life.
Mille Kalsmose has been exhibited nationally in juried exhibitions such as Kubstnernes Sommerudstilling, The Art Museum of West Jutland.
Internationally she has exhibited in Japan and Spain and been featured in publications and TV-shows.
Mille also takes part in think tanks, pilot projects and discussion groups of
art and innovation including Københavns Kommune, Nordjyllands Amt, Ørestad, Copenhagen Business School, Atkins Rådgivende Ingenører, Dansk Design Center

About the series Follow the White Rabbit
The paintings are inspired by the journey of Alice in Wonderland. A girl so curious
about the world around her, that she follows the white rabbit into a dark unknown rabbit hole.
But the paintings do not reflect a fairytale idyll. If you examine the paintings you see that under the surface anxiety, horror and loneliness appear. Surreal elements, trees with prickles and a human head in a bag lie concealed in the images.
The paintings investigate the double-edged nature of risk, exploration, and the process of becoming adult. |

About the series Pearl
The naive aesthetic language of these works is underlined by using the media of childhood. Pearls/beads are the media of a child.
By using pearls I want to reflects on episodes from childhood such as vacations, Christmas Eve, playing in the snow, Christening and sleeping in a pram.
I question the importance of episodes from childhood and how much these events have formed our identity and whether or not we are capable of distancing ourselves from it.
As in a photograph fragmented in pixels, the pearl images are distilled from emotions they are just snapshots from childhood. They open up the possibility of identifying with childhood, and at the same time of distancing ourselves from it, in order to take hold of of the future.

About the series Open Sesame
Life is like a play. A play with a principal character and her supporters and opponents, who as in a fairytale help the principal character unfold and reveal her identity.
Exploring the roles and the power of the people who surround me, and their possible influence on my identity, this series of paintings represents men who for one reason or another have a connection to me as a person or as an artist.
Friedrich Nietzsche, in Ecce Homo, sets out the relationship between the name of a person, their autobiography and the content of their identity. My identity is not fixed by armoured and perpetual definitions. My identity, according to Nietzsche, does not derive from property but from im-property (from what does not belong to me). My identity is formed by “the other”; from people who watch me and who interact with me. For that reason I am not a unitary, homogenous and static person.
My identity is fragmentatet in the glance of “the other” - they are only capable of seeing a part of who I am. But I recognize the necessity of “the other” because they also help me form my identity through a process of constant construction. The richness of my identity is created through relationships with those ”others” that I am not.
