Joseph Bernard

About the Artist

Within the recent past I’ve had major operations (lung, lung & heart), so I’ve had to reduce the size of my paintings. These are a few of them made with the idea that intimacy has validity, place and worth. Many artists that I’ve high regard for; Diebenkorn, Beuys, Johns, Duchamp, Brakhage and others, including a good number of poets, have made bantam works of great consequence. The trick, I think, is to make something fully itself with minimum acreage.

None of these paintings are preconceived – their existence come through a series of moves somewhat like a game. I find the work succeeds most when it approaches the quality of weather or silence.
