| In order not to entangle their own souls in their creation, Native American weavers often run a “spirit line” or string of thread to the edge of each weaving, forming a path by which the artist can escape the creation they have become a part of by creating it. It may also suggest independent, diagramatic motion of the image at the exact moment it disengages from the image-maker. Yuwipi shamans of the Oglala Sioux call spirits or powers from the past and future into the present and their manifestation is signaled by flickering lights coming from different places like the glows from large fireflies. Through this meditation the present world is placed in contact with all of our relations.
