| Some cultures believe dreams are sent by the gods, that they foretell the future, that our ‘essence’ genuinely leaves our bodies. Freud believed all dreams were wish fulfilments, depictions of distorted or repressed wishes. Jung held the view that along with dreams coloured by our personal experiences and those formed by our own place in society there are also certain archetypal dreams which have been dreamt across the globe from the very beginnings of our species.
I began to record my dreams in early adolescence and started to be aware of my dreaming state during sleep. |

| Be it fever-dreams or the nightmares that wait on the edge of sleep, dreams are bold and colourful. They recall cruel, visceral fairytales and ancient rites. At times of duress the gap between waking and sleeping seems to be closer and nightmares seep into the waking world. Dark Territory is a series of self-portraits from the twilight zone between waking and sleeping. It is based on hazy memories of nightmares and fever-dreams. |
