My work reflects inquiry, struggle, spirituality and angst.
The human body has long been my source of inspiration. It is used as the vehicle to describe the life cycle.
The process is investigative using organic form as a metaphor for internal landscapes and external perceptions. The body becomes the container for psychological responses that trigger and act as a vehicle to get into a painting. It is a metaphor used to give form to my own reality. the resultant forms are used to create an alphabet of symbols, which inform the work and give shape to life situations. Multiple readings are examined so that evolving imagery is abstract and open to different interpretations.
The paintings focus on psychological inwardness, relationships and changes in the body due to the effects of the environment or heredity manifested in disease. Like film, the paintings are built over time, of many layers of emotion and paint. They address color, light, form and tension in the thickly encrused surfaces. I use medical and anatomy textbooks of the interior and exterior of the body as sources, but soon, working intuitevely, abandon the specificity of them, in favor of letting the paint process dictate the way. Images extracted from nature turn into something else.
Rooted in the tradition of the figure, the physicality of the paint joined with the symbols is a narrative or dialogue between self and materials, revealing a personal history, yet remain ambiguous, mysterious and prevent a concrete objective reading of the work.
The resultant images are mostly abstract, but in fact, based on the constant inquiry into the reality of life experience.
