| John Lytle Wilson |
| |
|
Born 1977, Rock Hill, SC, USA
John Lytle Wilson not only paints animals, but also robots. After growing up in Rock Hill, South Carolina, John mastered his techniques at Florida State University and Birmingham-Southern College. He has a national exhibition record and has been featured in several online magazines and print publications. John is an Instructor at Florida State and Valdosta State Universities, and the Artist in Residence at 621 Gallery.
Family and friends call him John. He uses his middle name, “Lytle” only to distinguish himself from the tens of thousands of other John Wilsons out there (if you find yourself needing to say it, Lytle rhymes with “title” not “spittle”). While fine people, it would not be good to be confused with John Wilson the astrologer or John Wilson the large game hunter. It would be pretty cool if he were mistaken for John Wilson the game show host or John Wilson the ninja.
When not working in the studio, John avoids mowing the lawn and doing the dishes. He enjoys firecrackers, macaroni and cheese, and riding very, very small bicycles.

Whether worshiping an idol, watching a cartoon, or buying barbeque, people have long created and responded to depictions of animals. My paintings draw on both timeless religious iconography and modern commercial design. I see stylistic and thematic congruencies between these seemingly divergent sources. Stylized representations, symmetrical compositions, and garish colors all occur in religious and commercial imagery across all ages and from all over the earth. My work investigates humanitys tendencies to depict animals, and to employ these depictions to sell everything from food to god. Early humans drew the beasts that they would meet in the hunt. Mythologies developed featuring holy creatures, anthropomorphized species and sacred animals. Today we have cartoon characters, athletic mascots, and corporate logos. In each case animal imagery is a powerful indicator of a cultures priorities. Is this due to our recognition of a powerful marketing tool, or from some inherent divinity in animals? Are people compelled to represent beasts because we see something human in them, or because we see something animal in ourselves?
So why now the robots? I guess that's me tinkering with ideas about creation, consciousness, and mortality. With me the image often comes first and I realize later why it interested me. I'm starting on some pieces in which the robots and animals meet.
