I grew up under the influence of British colonialism in Hong Kong, a city mixed with Chinese traditions and western modernity. Facing the uncertain political future of the colony, my family and I in 1991 resettled in a small Pacific island, a "colony" of the United States called Guam. On the island I lived side by side not only with Americans but also Chamorros, the indigenous people of the Mariana Islands, and many other Micronesians from surrounding islands, such as Palau, Pohnpei, Kosrae, Chuuk, and Yap. This is a world where indigenous culture, colonial Spanish heritage, and American democracy meet. My exposures to these diverse cultures also directly shape how I appreciate the world.

My paintings are my mediation about an ambiguous choice between living freely and death. The three paintings—The Distant Garden, Familiar Innocence, and Erosion—are unified by the ambiguities we face everyday.
The Distant Garden portrays an atmosphere embodied by the wisdom of humanity, but it seems at the same time that humanity is unreachable. We see a perfect body, which resembles a sculpture, standing and contemplating a solution, as if it is a distant subject in the garden. The invisible barrier between the figure and his environment represents the inner feeling when people have to a choice on truth.
Next, Familiar Innocence portrays the struggle in the desire for lust, which is innocent at the beginning of life. The capacity to freely express lust is precious, but it could also draw us into risk, like the bodies drown in a threatening river.
Finally, Erosion is my thought of the power of love and hate. The figures that appear to be half-human and half-beast represent our irrational minds, which are often blinded by love and hate. The dragon symbolizes a powerful force in nature controlling our emotions; the eroding architectures correspondingly show an environment that is full of restrictions. This environment violates our freedom to choose between love and hate. |
