I grew up under the influence of British colonialism in Hong Kong, a city mixed with Chinese traditions and western modernity. Facing the uncertain political future of the colony, my family and I in 1991 resettled in a small Pacific island, a "colony" of the United States called Guam. On the island I lived side by side not only with Americans but also Chamorros, the indigenous people of the Mariana Islands, and many other Micronesians from surrounding islands, such as Palau, Pohnpei, Kosrae, Chuuk, and Yap. This is a world where indigenous culture, colonial Spanish heritage, and American democracy meet. My exposures to these diverse cultures also directly shape how I appreciate the world. |

My paintings are my mediation about an ambiguous choice between living freely and death. The three paintings—The Distant Garden, Familiar Innocence, and Erosion—are unified by the ambiguities we face everyday. |
