| Lesya Kara-kotsya |

| About the Artist |
Ukrainian karakoko. A new style in contemporary fine art.
Ukraine gave birth to lots of talented people who became known world wide. It’s a pity that most of them were recognized after they had died. An emerging Ukrainian artist Lesya Kara-Kotsya is very young yet (30 years old), but has already found recognition among arts lovers and critics, as she has created her own style of painting. Arts experts couldn’t define, to which direction Lesya’s paintings belong, so they gave her a right to name her style by herself, because it’s really new. She didn’t think for a long time and called it just ‘karakoko’: the first part of the name ‘kara’ was taken from the artist’s family name Kara-Kotsya, and ‘koko’ reminds us of rococo and baroque. She has just joked, but the public liked the idea and started calling her paintings that way.
Why is this style particular? It is determined by wide use of symmetrical floral patterns, rich color range and a symbolic idea. It’s impossible to find such patterns in any arts encyclopedia. They are created by Lesya’s imagination. When she was a small child and got bored listening to teachers at school (hardly ever got she full marks), she drew such flowers at the margins of her copy-books. She did it easily and didn’t have to think it out, it just came out of her imagination. When she became an artist, Lesya thought how she could apply those patters in fine art and turn them into professional paintings. Finally, she managed.
And what if other artists like the style and start copying it? – First of all they need to change their family names to “Karakotsya”, - the artress jokes. In fact, it’s possible to copy the patterns, but it’s quite difficult to create a professional composition and invent a deep idea, a conception. Every painting has its own fabulous story. For example, the painting “The Wind is walking over the sea, wearing red boots, and rescuing white lambs from the waves”. In Ukrainian the foam that appears on the waves in storm is metaphorically called ‘lambs’, because lambs usually have white curly fur. White lambs appear with the Wind that is painted as a Cossack wearing traditional Ukrainian costume. The Wind is rescuing lambs from the sea’s depth.
In her style she first depicted mythological and fairy-tale creatures. Then she started painting funny creatures: piglets with trunks, and called them khobotarkas (derived from a Ukrainian word “khobot” that means “a trunk”). There appeared lots of paintings, depicting khobotarkas adventures. There were three solo-exhibitions devoted to them: Khobotarkas’ Adventures, Travels and Chronicles. It made Lesya write a book “Khobotarkas’ Adventures. Rescuing the Spring Sun”. It contains about 100 author’s illustrations. It’s written in Ukrainian, but in close future Lesya’s going to have it translated into English, as she has many English speaking friends, who admire her art.

Sir Elton John
2007 acrylic on canvas, gold leaf 60x80cm |
|
After Sir Elton John's charity concert in Kyiv (Ukraine, 2007), Lesya was so greatly impressed with his professionalism that she painted his portrait and presented it to him. |
When Rock was Young.
2007 acrylic on canvas, gold leaf 125x80x2cm |
|
This painting was created under impression of Sir Elton John’s song “Crocodile Rock”. The name of the painting “When Rock was Young” is a phrase from this song.
The baby-crocodile symbolizes rock, when it was young. He bought all he needed for rock music: the best guitar and a drum, stylish jacket, rings and, of course, special boots “to hop and bop”. He got so much carried away that he didn’t notice he ran out of money and couldn’t buy trousers! But he doesn’t care about it any more, because he’s playing his guitar: that’s the only thing that matters.

On the seventh day God rested.
2007 acrylic on canvas 60x80cm |
|
It's not a religious painting, it's a joke. God have been working hard for 6 days. On the seventh day he decided to take a rest. He has beautful mermaids serving for him. He's sitting in his rocking-chair, made of the moon (it was God to have invented a rocking-chair). He has ordered a jazz band to sing for him (the soloist is a deer, a fox is playing the piano, a khobotarka - the guitar, a fish - the drum, and mice are back singers). Those who create great things, can rest greatly as well. |

Lesya Kara-Kotsya presents a new series of her paintings "Horoscopes, or Zodiac in Ukrainian". She wonders how totally different people are combined under one sign of Zodiac and consequently have common traits of character. “It’s interesting to me that people are compared with animals or signs, – Lesya says. – There appears Появляется unity of a symbol and a human”. That is why almost all her signs of Zodiac have human faces that are out-going and friendly. That is really so, because kids are born with naïve and clear souls. From the very first day of life everybody is accompanied with a symbol – a caring guardian angel. But as years pass by, people change and gain bad traits. Despite this their symbols stay as kind as before. |

In Lochness there lives Nessi with her little baby Nessi. Take care of nature.
2008 acrylic on canvas, genuine gold 100x80x2cm |
|
Many people argue about a strange creature, living in the Lochness Lake. No one has seen it, but for some reason everybody’s sure it’s a cruel monster. In Lesya Kara-Kotsya’s imagination it’s not a monster at all, but a kind and beautiful animal. Moreover, it’s a caring mother. The artist calls to love and caring for nature that is always kind, if it’s treated kindly. |
A Wonder is looking at a Wonder and wondering.
2008 acrylic on canvas, genuine gold and silver 100x80x2cm |
|
Lesya Kara-Kotsya has a special knack of painting fantastic and mythological creatures. In this painting there are two Wonders that she took from Ukrainian mythology. They were often told about in many myths, but there was no exact way they looked like, they were all different. The only peculiar feature about them was being strange and different from all the others. Lesya’s Wonders are wondering at each other and it’s really difficult to say, which one of them is more wonderful.
In this painting one can definitely see Lesya’s style that she named karakoko. She uses ethnic Ukrainian patterns. On embossed scrolls there is a beautiful interlacing of gold and silver. This is a technique that the artist borrowed from ancient manuscripts.
