The Drawing Lesson

| The "Drawing Lesson" is a painting concerned with the passage of life and the passing on of knowledge learned in the process.
The woman is passing on her knowledge of drawing and the intricate study of nature. The still life put out for the young girl to draw
consists of figs, symbol of vitality and creativity, artichokes, symbol of fertility, the lily, symbolizing life and death, and the dying sunflower, showing death with renewal through the seeds.
The light falls onto the table and the young girl.
Behind her on the wall is a painting containing the image of an ancient Greek temple
representing knowledge passed down through the ages.
