An exhibition of paintings and performance by Truman Marquez 'ConTemplate'
explores themes of detachment, transgression, disintegration, cultural appropriation,
interaction between the audience and artwork, and challenges the notion of art as commodity. The artist uses images of cultural iconography established by the public to create a layered visual narrative, and directly shares it with the public by inviting viewers to carve out pieces of his paintings - oil on stretched linen using a cutter and a template. Each piece, signed by the artist and placed in a transparent plastic bag, becomes property of a viewer. Carved paintings will continue to be exhibited as a regular gallery exhibition.
