Aasta Deth

About the Artist

I am interested in what lies in the space between. I seek to find the cross sections of the clinical and the liminal- external and internal. One being understood literally through the visual and sensory and one as more of a belief- something that is understood on a deeper level through emotive responses. Through the merging of these two fields I explore the familiar and the uncanny and what happens when they split and intersect.
Using the body as a framework to strip down and build my work off of, it lays a foundation for the viewer to approach and experience. Often, the body is present in a mimicking form, a cast or artificial self, other times it is more subtle, engaging the viewer in a dialogue that engages their senses or makes them more aware of there own bodies in the space. The liminal space between the physical and psychological is ripe with our own notions of our physical selves, what occurs to the psychological when part of the physical is removed? I use the remnant as a way to explore the mediated body.
Notions of mediation are exploited as I layer and weave video, projections, casts and industrial plastics into forms that are neither bodies nor images. At every moment the viewer is confronted with skewed representations of normalcy and bodily space- calling the physicality of the body into question while creating an overbearing sense of intimacy. My work is always a two-way dialogue between a body and a viewer, with the view distorted from both sides.

Created along with the Simultaneous Release project, I also gold leafed my entire body. The private preformative action became my way of glorifying of the object.
