关于此艺术家

Leftover fabrics from my handmade garments and my father's jewelry display material, and fabric from my sewing friends becomes the basis for my works of art.Interested in art, at age 11 I won my first prize of $25.00 in a Buffalo newspaper coloring contest. I then took a plein air class at the Albright Knox Museum of Art, and later portrait lessons from my aunt, Rhoda Lurie Fried. Now the mission of my art is to layer various fabrics, sometimes add embroidery and other embellishments, and finally some acrylic and fabric paints to transform my visions- often colorful interiors and nature. My watercolors and digital photographs are sometimes preludes to fabric art pieces. A main experience, influence, inspiration was being the only female grandchild of Taylor Caldwell - a best-selling author of 33 novels, who passed away in 1985. School always cited my potential, and people said I inherited some of the eccentricities of my grandmother. In an effort to escape the bewilderment of my youth, and to earn a living, I studied psychology. I dreamed of palm trees and mountains, and moved to California; at first to earn a doctorate, also finally escaping the unappealing effects of the Great Lakes on New York weather. More recently, after forays in singing and sewing, in 1999 I became a serious visual artist; often through self-study and by osmosis because I was fortunate to be included by local artists. In 2005 I semi-retired from full-time school psychology and private counseling to become a full time multi-mixed media artist. A relatively new sewing item, Steam-A-Seam glue makes my whole collage pieces strong and durable. While the photos of the fabric pieces can be nice, each original is one of a kind, not easily duplicated. Just finding each desired fabric can be a task, not like just opening up a tube of paint and buying more when you run out.

TRANQUILITY

2002
Fabric,acrylic, fabric paint
81cm X 94 cm

TRANQUILITY
This was my first interior landcape, and I had fun creating the mountains by cutting and laying down various fabrics, setting them with the glue, and then using machine embroidery to create various effects, with a river and rocks to act as sort of a middle ground. The foreground speaks for itself.

THE TWIN TOWERS

2002
Fabric, fabric paints,metal studs
81 cm X 94 cm

THE TWIN TOWERS
This was made for my son to remember what still should be there for everyone to see. He called me on 9-11-01 from his 16th floor apt. in Manhattan as he watched in horror 2 blocks away the scene that we feared would begin WWIII.

Flaming Dusk

2006
Fabrics, acrylic,fabric paints,digital photo
51cm X 46 cm

Flaming Dusk
I live on a bluff with wonderful sunsets. Out the "window" of my fabric interior is a 10cm X 15 cm digital photo I took and printed of one of them. Then I built the living room scene around it, with the acrylic paint sunflowers reaching up from the fabric vase into the sunset, and the two candles on the left midground providing tiny flames, not being much ambiance with such a wild sunset at dusk.

AFRICAN VIOLETS FOR MY VALENTI

2003
fabrics, acrylic and fabric paint
51cm X 46 cm

I bought these violets for my husband on Valentine's Day, and then proceeded to sketch and paint several watercolors, some abstract, some more realistic, before I decided to include them in another interior.

Mullions Out to Vegas- Tranqui

2006
fabrics, embroidery, H2Oils, watercolor, acrylic and fabric paint
97 cm X 71 cm

Mullions Out to Vegas- Tranqui
I broke the "only one area of interest (rule)" with my most complicated interior. The leather wood window braces(mullions) lead out to the Flamingo Hotel. This is an 8" X 10" watercolor painting -is glued- so as to look out the bedroom window, while a basket of flowers and a lit fireplace are in the middle ground. Above the fireplace is a small oil painting of an imaginary mountain scene. The hassock in the foreground sets the stage for enjoying the hotel bedroom. It holds flowers, red and white wine (I like red, my husband likes white) and a snack of cheese and some fruit.

A Regent's scholarship, a trip to France, and a “No Limits” attitude, along with a strong work ethic, spurred me on to learn to paint and to create fabric art. "Twin Towers" which won 2nd place in 2002 was for my son who lived in Manhattan at the time, 3 blocks away when the terrorists hit. (First place that year was another of my fabric pieces “Tranquility” which became the first in a series of 6 “interior landscapes”.) "Flowers for My Valentine" a piece I did for my husband won 3rd place in the fair, and was juried into the Madiera citrus show in California.
