SCULPTURE AS AN AFFIRMATION OF OPTIMISM
Text from the Greek newspaper 'AXIA' written by A. CH. V.
Yannis Koutsouradis is an artist of that generation which has indeed put forward praiseworthy and renowned sculptors, whom gave a fresh impulse to contemporary sculpture. Been himself also a student of the master sculptor Yannis Pappas, Koutsouradis worked initially in Greece and after a period of travels, he has settled in the Netherlands. Soon he became a pioneering creative artist in his field. However he often comes back to his homeland and presents his work. Been a sea child, in him palpitates the undulation of the maritime dream, the seashores of the native country, and his grip of the ancient values - been his conscience, are all fermented and transformed into his work and through his quest of the modern knowledge and research.
The element of abstraction in the work of Koutsouradis is a reference to the values of light, while at the same time evokes exaltation - a burst of feelings of positiveness. His sculpture stand firmly on earth while at the same time always transcends towards the sky: a genuine aesthetic expression which through its formation testifies a metaphysical affirmation of optimism. Koutsouradis is daring to colour the material, and the form is painterly revitalized, becomes immediate, the colour red is unified with that of blood... and blue with that of heaven and the surrounding tints. In such a way living palpitates, the work cooperates and co-exists with the inhabitants around it. But also with the travellers - in the case of his sculptures which have been placed on the upper decks of international cruise-liners. There, the work become an everyday experience to the voyagers, offering them the joy of life and of aesthetics. Ingredients so much sought after by the contemporary man, having lost them to the distortion of nature and his living environment.

Yannis Koutsouradis among other commissions has realized sculptures of a large scale for over-ocean vessels for the United States. He constructed them according to open-sea specifications, out of stainless steel and coloured porcelain enamel; he did so in advanced technology workshops in Germany, Austria, and the Netherlands. The sculptures have been placed on the upper deck of these boats, on especially designed architectural spaces.

...That Koutsouradis has been able to take a harsh metal and mould it into fluidity is admirable in itself, but that he has been able to inject his pieces with living lasting brilliant colour is remarkable.
The artist in Koutsouradis has been slowly and steadily developing from the human figure with which he began, through his work on sea forms in bronze, to the more recent experimental work in enamel on metal, the exciting Four Seasons Columns, and now to the current free standing pieces of glistening shimmering plasticity in colours that will, along with his talent, outlast the artist.

Yannis Koutsouradis has concluded his studies and research as a sculptor, at three well-known art academies in Europe. Initially at the in Athens Art Academy, (5 years), his tutor was one of today's pioneering figures, the sculptor Yannis Pappas. Koutsouradis, as an Athenian born, has also studied ancient art in several museums in Greece and abroad. In London, initially at Camberwell School of Art, and later at Central / Saint Martin's School, and in conjunction to the Royal College of Art, (2 years in total), he has been able to introduce afresh to the open-air sculpture the materials of colour vitreous / glass enamels fused on three-d. steel. In Amsterdam / Holland, (his second working place with Athens), Koutsouradis, been invited there by the visionary Rector of the Rietveld Art Academy - the late Rene v. d. Land, was able to create, in collaboration to the Dutch industry, (2 years), a series of large scale steel / enamelled works which render a fresh impulse to open-air sculpture and also with its relationship to the water land - scape of Holland. For that he had been twice awarded both by the English government (The British Council), and by the Greek, (I.K.Y.). Recently he has been awarded a Dutch state prise for his open-air sculpture.
During his more than thirty years of uninterrupted career, Koutsouradis has pioneered in several art events and tendencies. His sculptures on water, the ''Islands of Cyclades''1986, have been the inspiring idea of perhaps the most beautiful theme in the Athens Olympic Games 2004 opening ceremony: ''The Greek Islands on water in the stadium''. Recently he had the privilege to be commissioned large scale stainless-steel / colour enamelled works of a unique project for the open-air decks of over-ocean cruise liners, or otherwise ˜The floating museum boats. Until today they travel incorporating works by artists like Christo, R. Lichtenstein, J. Chamberlain, A. Kapour, D. Koukos, and J. Koons.
Koutsouradis has also been commissioned by private as well as public bodies, other sculptures or medals and numerous portrait busts of historic figures, realised in bronze or marble rendering in this otherwise traditional form, a fresh approach and vitality. At his native Chios / Greece, he has been commissioned the Golden Key of the capital, as well as the II W.W. Memorial made in gilded bronze, erected five meters high at the entrance of the harbour of the city. Yannis Koutsouradis besides numerous participations in exhibitions in European cities has also exhibited work in Japan, Moscow, Canada and Brazil. |
