When photographing in the City, I strive to find images that show the geometry of the surroundings and how the people ease in and out of the shadows; I strive to show humanity suspended in negative space, or surrounded on all sides by encroaching and consuming urbanity. The City itself is a confusing yet orderly construct; it exists as an amalgam of human history built up, torn down and inevitably rebuilt again. Devoid of landmarks, this City loses any sense of “place”. No longer somewhere familiar, it becomes everyplace, and possibly a dangerous one at that.
I look for the intersection of people and the urban landscape -- how people are a part of, yet still detached from, that landscape – how they contribute to the ebb and flow of the theater of the street. I try to see if they are affected by that relationship one way or another, and capture that if I can.
