Angela Svoronou’s staged (photographs that are) portraits engage with the current topical interrogation of the found vs, the staged image and tableau and naturalism in the creation of narrative content in contemporary photographic practice. Svoronou references Jeff Wall’s discussion of the absorptive mode, (Wall referencing the eighteenth century treatises of Diderot) ‘in which figures are immersed in their own world and activities and display no awareness of the construct of the picture and the necessary presence of the viewer’. Such strategies were also employed by nineteenth century photographers such as Julia Margaret Cameron whose apparent naturalism in her large head studies belies a controlled and necessarily staged process of image making with the aim of conveying emotional or spiritual truth or subjectivity. In referring to the traditions of portrait painting Svoronou uses the accumulation of objects around her sitters to suggest information about identity rather than gesture. Again this stillness might be interestingly considered in relation to nineteenth century photography (though not Cameron) where it was a technical requirement that a sitter remain motionless for a relatively long period, but the almost deadly stillness was compensated for by use of props. The notion of story telling is taken further in Svoronou’s work through the juxtaposition of her photographs with text bites obtained when the artist put the photographs’ title as a search topic in Google. Thus the viewer is invited to use this to strengthen a correlation with a presumed or implied narrative.
