I was born in Mumbai, India in June 1966 and started painting when i was about 7. I'm not that hot on spoken words and so the visual media are my means of expression.

I am inspired by what is not and what could be, and so the meaning of the image i work is as important to me as the technique of its rendition. Only when i have them both in balance, i have created something. |

Red Room by the Sea
2006 Oil on canvas 76.2 cm x 101.6 cm |
|
‘Red Room by the Sea,’depicts a state of mind where one is forced to relinquish control of their life, and accept whatever may come. It is also about a time in my life when I lived near the Sea in Bombay. |
The Only Promise
2005 Oil on canvas 45.72 cm x 60.96 cm |
|
‘The Only Promise,’ponders over life and how the end of it is nothing but its compliment. A tired but contented figure holds the gate of life on Earth shut, from the outside. Everything we see from the other side is the complimentary hue of the way we know it to be. Everything sits in comfortable balance - it is a Natural order. We come into this world and are given life - no promises about anything - but for one promise which is the only one, - its end, someday.

Tried by Time
2006 Oil on canvas 91.44 cm x 91.44 cm |
|
‘Tried by Time,’combines iconic symbolism with realistic expression. The youth of a human is spent almost frivolously - disregarding Time and trying out everything. But inevitably old age hits us and turns the tables - guilt about the past and a lack of Time come with wisdom, and then, we are ‘tried by time.’ This is a self portrait. |
The Passage of Passions Untold
2007 Oil on canvas 76.2 cm x 101.6 cm |
|
The Passage of Passions Untold’shows two different angles of a single face - both lit differently - one from above and one from below. The viewer’s eye is led into a vortex and a third face emerges from out of the imagination. Passion of any kind is such - it is unspoken, burning and extremely focused. It leads you into the dark unknown and opens up your imaginative third eye to a Creative new dimension. It is a portrait of my beautiful wife Gaia...we were married in 1990.

Passage to Revelation
2006 Oil on canvas 91.44 cm x 121.92 cm |
|
'Passage to Revelation,' shows a startled young boy at the end of a passage - The news he overhears is about to change the meaning of his life forever. |
The Plot
2005 Oil on canvas 76.2 cm x 91.44 cm |
|
This is the story of three very stupid people, hatching a plot to cultivate a plot of land which is obviously too near to the sea. Yet they toil, the seed bearer, the planter and the water bearer who brings buckets of salt water with which nothing will grow. This is a symbolic statement about a real incident. |
Renacimiento
1994 Watercolour on Paper 106.68 cm x 160.02 cm |
|
‘Renacimiento,’is an expression of rebirth across cycles of birth or even the awakening of the human within one birth cycle. The structure is opposite the Pune Airport. The title in Spanish has its own special significance to my life. |
The House
1995 Watercolour on paper 114.3 cm x 144.78 cm |
|
‘The House,’challenges the cursed ‘broken home,’ myth - which so many would like to attribute to bad luck and bad wishes..Are there truly a ‘cursed’ group of people who have to go through broken homes, or is it systematic neglect and lack of care that leads to this situation? I question this with a very neglected but grand structure in Yerwada, Pune, which a lot of people call haunted and cursed. I truly feel that lack of maintenance, for whatever reasons, is why this house is the way it is. I compare it to my own family - my parents...that didnt care enough, and broke apart our home and my life..and still to this day they believe that somebody put an evil curse upon us all. |
Heroine Interrupted
2007 Oil on canvas 91.44cm x 121.92cm |
|
This is a Symbolic Painting about life's many interruptions, depicting a young heroine interrupted as she frolicks in an aqueduct - she is surprised at the intrusion into her privacy - yet her body is for all to see on the silver screen - she is young and arrogant - somewhat larger than life, with all the fame and yet in reality she is only human. |
The Birth of Fortitude
2005 oil on canvas 91.44 x 71.12 |
|
This painting is about the strength of a person to rise above all challenges, however demeaning they may be or however tired one is. The painting shows a nude, tired woman washed to the shore, raising herself to face the challenges ahead yet again - much stronger this time...devoid of pretensions...purifyed by the many trials she has faced. She is inspired by 'The Birth of Venus,' only here, Fortitude does not drift in on an oyster...she is washed up on the rocky shore - there are no promises right at the start of her journey..she has no expectations - but she is content as her immense strength will carry her forward. |

1992 Watercolor on Paper 76cms x 45cms |
|

Girl in a Red Dress
1993 Watercolour on Paper 61cms x 91cms |
|
She poses for me - for my Art school assignments. She's my muse...my inspiration...my friend...my lover - my girl in a red dress. |
to Perfumed Dreams...
1997 Watercolour on Paper cms x cms |
|
she is a really good mother - something she was so afraid she wouldn't be! She's toiled all day and has now bathed baby...and rocks her to bed in the delicate aroma of frankinsence. There is nothing that could come between them...hence the barrier - but this partition is not made of bars - but instead of beautiful beads. She is exhausted, yet so proud and alertly protective...Such is the amazing, exclusive bond of mother and child. She is my wife, and this is our daughter..she's one and a half years old. |
high horse
1995 Watercolour on Paper 150cms x 136cms |
|
This painting is a statement about heroin addiction. The addict is on their 'high horse' so to speak...being arrogant of their self destruction... their personality enslaved by the addiction and taken to the level of a toilet bowl. Yet the desire to be normal and free of the burden they carry is always there...burning like a candle...if they only use the light it throws before it's too late and the candle burns out. This painting is dedicated to a friend...who left this world in 1989. The candle of hope burned out too quickly for him. May his soul rest in peace. |
Reflection
1994 Watercolour on Paper 50cms x 140cms |
|
She has gone and done something she is so ashamed of..the gravity of losing control of her emotions is heavy on her soul...she is sad and remorseful, and she reflects...

kahan se aaye hum...
1999- 2000 Watercolour on Paper 40cms x 150cms |
|
...she is India - she's wise, and old, and has come a long way. She wonders..'where do we come from....who are we....where are we going? It is one panel of four, of varying widths, to create a single panoramic image. It has been inspired by Paul Gauguin's turn of the century masterpiece by the same name, only here, it is 100 years later - it is the year 2000. The symbols are subjective. This is how i feel today about my India. |

|
This painting is an abstraction of Mt.Kanchanjunga. |
abstract - The Link
2007 Oil on Canvas 91.44cms x 76.2cms |
|
The opposites...separate yet together. They exist because of each other. They are apart yet linked by a continous energy flow between them. |
abstract - Threads of Life
2007 Oil on Canvas 76cms x 76cms |
|
when the very basics that hold life together become the very bane of one's existence..the threads of life - in the red so corner me in, and yet i fight to remain in peace - so that they may not break and destroy my family |
