| 关于此艺术家 |
I work with magazine and textbook photographs that have been discarded and forgotten, pictures that sit on the shelves of second hand stores or amongst the trash on the curb. I have been scavenging and storing these lost images for many years; supplying me with a stock pile of materials that I rely on as both a source and an inspiration for my assemblage practices.
Some of my pieces are simple photo based collages while others combine printed photographs with a variety of mixed media such as paint and craft papers. To further manipulate some images I often use colour copiers and computer software but I never allow the technology to overpower the "naïve" aesthetic of traditional cut and paste. I prefer to keep the works humble and tactile.
I approach each work with the intention of fabricating a unified image that appears both credible and questionable.
I do so by loosely sizing and combining photographs to fit within a constructed environment. Each work is built to delicately play with our notion of composition and perspective. The end result is an image that appears authentic yet shows the scars of being manufactured.
I adopt the same practice when solidifying concepts and presenting ideas. The works are intended as constructed pictorial documents that comment on the status of certain emotional or socio political conditions in a single, bold statement. Each work is created as an "absurd" yet poignant reflection on what I consider to be truthful and sincere about a given situation.
I feel that in both method and content my work oscillates between our understanding of what is artificial and what is factual. Each collage challenges the viewer to analyze its physical and conceptual authenticity. Here in lies the power of the medium; in its ability to communicate on many levels via a recycled visual language.
I am committed to the power of art as a form of self-expression and an object for intellectual dialogue. With this in mind, I feel that a successful artwork should be experienced personally and poetically even as it is examined analytically or philosophically. Photo collage allows me to constantly test this endless boundary and to visually challenge our views of what is real and what is unknown. |
