Rob Lydyard

About the Artist

My artwork is of contemporary images of classic footballing moments. I believe that the excitement and passion of football is interlinked to the art of the beautiful game. I work from digital images and manipulate them, painting them on large 100cm by 80cm canvas in acrylics. My inspirations are to create commissioned work for football clubs in the UK and around the world, of the most memorable moments in their history.

Hand of God - June 22nd 1986

2006
Acrylic on canvas
90cm x 80cm

Pixelated view of Maradona's infamous goal.

Zidane - July 12th 1998

2006
Acrylic on canvas
100cm x 80cm

Zidane's powerful header from a set piece put the Brazilian's to the sword in this memorable final. I wanted to single out Zidane and the ball in colour to increase the sense of the moment. One of my favourite goals of all time. For a number of reasons, namely, the sheer power of the header and the unstoppable force that ensued from it. The fact the scorer was a 1st generation African immigrant, the inclusion of which into the national side had only really begun to be fully accepted by the whole of the French nation. Sheer drama, passion and beautiful football.

Owen - September 1st 2001

2006
Acrylic on canvas
100cm x 80cm

Owen's celebration after his 3rd goal against Germany. This image for me encapsulates the joy, and shock of a nation after beating Germany 5:1 in their own backyard.

Rijkaard vs Voller - June 24th 1990

2006
Acrylic on canvas
100cm x 80cm

The spitting incident that encapsulated a pretty nasty battle between the Netherlands and Germany in the 1990 finals.

Best - May 15th 1971

2006
Acrylic on canvas
100cm x 80cm

A classic portrait of Best, midway through one of his trademark turns on the ball.

Pele - June 21st 1970

2006
Acrylic on canvas
90cm x 70cm

Abstract image of Pele's goal in the 1970 final. Italy equalised in the 37th minute but then Brazil became truly magical in their football and beat them 4:1. This is one of my favorites.

Owen - Novemeber 17th 2004

2006
Acrylic on canvas
100cm x 80cm

An exciting action pose as the Spanish defender comes clattering in on Owen.

Gazza - July 4th 1990

2006
Acrylic on canvas
100cm x 80cm

Gazza leaving the field after England go out on penalties to West Germany in the 1990 semi-final.

Education and biography
I'm not formally educated in Art (hindsight is a wonderful thing and if I could go back I would definitely have gone to art college and not done a science degree). Some prints of my work are up in "The Hill" 33-35 Cotham Hill, Bristol. However, my main exhibition was during the World Cup 2006 in the Tobacco Factory, Southville, Bristol (june to july 2006).

Future shows
none planned at the moment
