Ian Anderson

About the Artist

I believe in freedom of expression and think that the best way to achieve this is by experimentation in acrylic and oil paints. The influence of Patrick Butler and Gary Basset at the Adult Education centre in Rochester has encouraged me to investigate a range of painting styles, particularly abstract art which I have found stimulating. I am interested in African art and culture having lived in Zambia during my early childhood. This has resulted in several paintings with an African theme, these are painted spontaneously from my sub conscious and are the result of images assimilated and stored in memory over a period of 35 years. Although I want to continue painting in this style I do not want to become trapped in one particular style, I think experimentation with other styles and techniques keeps my interest and motivates me to keep working. I enjoy painting most subjects including abstract, landscape, seascape, flowers and have learned much from studying artists such as Claude Monet, Vincent Van Gogh, Mark Rothko and Howard Hodgkins to name but a few.
All my works share the same love of colour, recent works are based on images of sunset and sunrise in which I strive to capture the feelings of happiness which the sun brings, this reminds me of my days in Africa which were full of happy memories. These paintings also allow me to explore the joy of painting in pure colour.

Education and biography
I studied A level art at the Adult Education Centre, Rochester, Kent where I was influenced by Patrick Butler and Gary Basset to explore both landscape and abstract oil painting.
Several years futher study with the Open College Of Arts (OCA) has allowed me the freedom of expression and I now enjoy painting vibrant sunset and seascapes. However I also enjoy creating abstract pieces.

2005 Successfully exhibited a series of African themed paintings at the London Picture Centre, Fulham Road, London
