Edwin Daniel

About the Artist

Edwin Daniel (1981) is a young mexican artist, painter and illustrator. He´s the initiator of a new art movement known worldwide as "Sinister Mexican Naïf" (SMN), that combines sweet beautiful characters with a morbid and creepy spirit, "just as the humans are" says the artist. A son of his epoch, Edwin Daniel portraits the spirit of the man of the 21st Century. "This is a new age, I am an observer of the humanity, we are not really different from thousands of years ago, the same motives still moving us, I paint about everything that concerns the humankind: love, power and money, those are the themes about it´s based my artwork".

Girl in love

2006
Acrylic on paper
40 x 40 cms

"Muchacha enamorada" ("Girl in love") is one of my favorite paintings. This girl is ready to fall in love, without being afraid. Can you see the Cupid´s arrow ready to being shoot directly to her heart??.

Perros

2005
Acrylic on Wood.
50 x 50 cms

These dogs are eating the one to the each other. The title says "We believe in love", maybe love somebody is eating that person.

Blue Worm rided by an angel

2005
Acrylic on canvas
25 x 35 cms

Blue Worm rided by an angel
"Gusano Azul montado por un Ángel" ("Blue Worm rided by an Angel") is part of my series "Gusanos" ("Worms"). In one side it is a devil, with horns and a weapon... and a necktie, and in the other it is a horned skull. It is a strange vision from the worms, the angels and even the devils. The series "Gusanos" is inspired in the idea that when you die, the ones that will eat your body will be the worms, the angels will take that form and will eat the flesh for liberate the soul, and ride it to the "other side".

Jesus of Suburbia

2005
Acrylic on canvas
30 x 20 cms

This is a image inspired in the "Yellow Christ" of Gauguin. I clasified it as a pop image ´cause the look of the Christ, with jeans and a T-Shirt that says "I Feel Love". At his right there´s a skeleton representing the death and at his left a boy... I thought about it as a selfportrait, but it doesn´t looks like me... it is a strange image, I am not really sure if I like it or not. The people dancing behind... well, I do not understand what are they doing there... maybe they are clubbing, maybe they don´t know what will happen with them in the future or even tomorrow, so, they will dance till drop dead. The title of this painting is taken directly from a song of the punk band "Green Day" titled "Jesus of Suburbia".

Cat

2004
Acrylic on Wood
30 x 30 cms

This character, "The Cat", was part of Edwin Daniel´s first series "Las mascaras del hombre" ("The masks of the man").

Fat Angel

2005
Acrylic on canvas
20 x 30 cms

This is the painting of a Fat Angel. The blue skin means divinity. The painting says "Abundance and Splendor".
