Elizabeth Miller Mccue

关于此艺术家

In sculpture I work primarily in unique bronze castings ranging in scale from gallery works to installations and public commissions. I also fabricate in steel, aluminum and mixed media.

Most recently my small scale gallery works have been concerned with variations on the sphere and the image of the house. This work is personal and defined by its relation to the hand.

My public work, though, is different in intent and scale. It is to be understood and accessible to a wide audience, and perhaps populist in feeling. It is defined by its relationship to the body - you are able to move in, out and around the space it occupies - it is real physical space.

Works on paper are predominately in charcoal and oil sticks, media similar to the sculptural materials of clay and wax. The scale of my drawings is large. As with sculpture, I need to be physically engaged with the work.

My images provide an overview of my work.

Face to Face

2006-07
Patinated bronze
Individual Element: 32.5 cm x 30 cm x 27.5 cm; Composition: 32.5 cm x 67.5 cm x 27.5 cm

Face to Face is an open welded design that structurally references the spatial play of a Cubist composition. Like a body its physical presence appears to move as the positive and negative spaces shift and turn. I plan to enlarge this work to 150 cm in height.

Ball of Leaves

1995
Patinated cast bronze
60 cm x 60 cm x 60 cm

Ball of Leaves was awarded in 1995 the Environmental Sculpture Commission by Salomon Inc. for their corporate headquarters at the now former 7 World Trade Center. In the sphere being is gathered and concentrated around a center. As a form it has many levels of reference, among them, the macrocosms and the microcosms, the world and individual man. Ball of Leaves is an image of abundance, growth and fertility.

Dorothy Was Here

1999-2000
Mixed Media: Wood, indoor-outdoor carpet, wire, foam
Individual Shoe: 80 cm x 85 cm x 180 cm; Composition: 80 cm x 305 cm x 180 cm

Created for the exhibition, Philadelphia Sculptors 2000, at the Woodmere Art Museum, Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia, PA, Dorothy Was Here has been exhibited at the Sculpture Center of the Kouros Gallery (NY, NY), Ridgefield, CT; The Art Alliance, Philadelphia, PA; the grounds of Princeton Day School, Princeton, NJ; and, is now sited at the Summit Outdoor Art Project [SOAP], Summit, NJ. Dorothy's ruby slippers are magical images from childhood, a sculpture to play in and on, intended to be discovered unexpectedly outdoors in a fairy tale setting of trees and greenery to the delight of both children and adults. It is an image of adventure into the world over the rainbow of The Wizard of Oz.

Shelter

Shelter
Patinated cast bronze
43 cm x 58 cm x 58 cm

The idea of "house" is in our consciousness and is itself a kind of body, rising vertically yet defined by its contours that embrace like arms and envelop us. Shelter as an image of the house is not a literal representation, but rather felt, reflecting an internal intimate landscape rather than an actual abode. It is here we rest and dream. Shelter has the distinction of being awarded sculpture prizes by Charlotta Kotik, Holland Cotter, and Ivan Karp. Private Collection

Back Dive

2006
Oil stick on prepared paper
111 cm x 134 cm

A major part of my training was devoted to life drawing and the study of the Masters. Recently I have been inspired to return to the figure, Back Dive and Face to Face (image 7) are examples of this return. Currently on exhibit at Sidetracks Art Gallery, New Hope, PA, through April 1.

Vishnu On Garuda

2007
charcoal on paper
111 cm x 134 cm

In the last two years I have been inspired to return to the figure, in particular exploring interpretations of Hindu-Buddhist mythology, my undergraduate and post-graduate fields of study. I seek to express graphically the great mythic underpinnings that bind us together in our thoughts, experiences and dreams.

Feral Creature

2007
Branches and String / Bronze Casting Possible
53 cm x 89 cm x 92 cm

Recently I have been inspired to return to figurative / animal inspired imagery

Ball of Thorns, No. 2

1996 - 2001
Patinated Cast Bronze
91 cm x 91 cm x 91 cm

Ball of Thorns, No. 2 exists in opposition to Ball of Leaves [above]. As opposites the images further explore the dichotomy of pagan versus Christian symbolism.

Witness

2007
Charcoal on Paper
127 cm x 109 cm

Mother protecting child, dog protecting both, witnesses to a crime

Nesting Ground: Seven to be Found

2008

61 cm x 99 cm x 99 cm [Nest # 5]

教育程度与个人自传
Studies of Southeast Asian art, in particular the Hindu-Buddhist reliefs and sculptures of Indonesia and Cambodia, were pursued at Vassar College and on the graduate level at the University of London, School of Oriental and African Studies.

Following graduate school, drawing, painting and sculpture were studied intensively at the Arts Students League and the New York Studio School with Sidney Simon, Sidney Geist, Nicholas Carone, Gabriel Laderman, William Tucker, Clement Meadmore and Peter Agostini.

I have sought with my background to develop a personal vision through perception, examination and experience.

I have been awarded 12 public commissions; six grants for sculpture, most recently in 2004 by the DC Commission for Arts and Humanities for the Capitol Hill Sculpture Project; and, have had six solo exhibitions. In December 2006, I was selected as one of the finalists for the RiverWalk Project, an international public art competition in Wisconsin, USA.

In addition I have also exhibited in over 50 national, regional and international sculpture and works on paper exhibitions. Distinguished curators and jurors, Charlotta Kotik, Holland Cotter and Ivan Karp have selected my work for exhibitions and awards.

Major group exhibition highlights include Sculpture Outdoors, 1996-2004, at the Sculpture Center of the Kouros Gallery in Ridgefield CT (please see William Zimmer's review, "Crop of New Names, Fields of Sculpture," The New York Times, Sunday, August 17, 1997: 14); Flora, Sculptures of the Natural World, 2004, The Orangerie Gallery, United States Botanic Garden Conservatory; and Landscapes: An Exhibition of Sculpture, 1997, Museum of the Americas, Organization of American States, Washington DC.
