Rendering traditionally cheerful images and concepts into frightening, yet humorous, tableaus, Michael Mararian focuses on children as the last bastion of innocence to explore the dark humor behind social and psychological issues. What can on one level be construed as melancholy and cruel, can alternately be viewed as amusing, even charming. He enjoys letting his viewers decide. Originally from Andover, Massachusetts, Michael currently resides and practices his art in Buffalo, New York. He attributes his inspiration to his wife Elizabeth and their (now three) cats, 99 and Mavis and Charlotte.

| 关于此艺术家 |
Since the early 1980s, my work has involved turning things upside down and inside out. In my recent work, I deconstruct the American dream touching apon such topics as gross consumerism, school violence, teenage disappointments, pressures and the slowly growing social isolation that are part of our childhood and adult culture. Often times these themes are combined using real children as my inspiration from variuos forms of photography. The use of contradition is an intrical part of my work to maginfy the absurdity of any given situation and add humor to the piece. I give the impression that my subjects are pasted cut-outs, hovering in their environments, skin tones rendered in grey to add to their removed, unearthly state of being. They are part of this vibrant world yet quite alone. Often I use the colors red, white and blue to further reinforce that it is without a doubt the "American" way of life we are examining.
Each work is hand drawn in various paint, drybrush and ink forms, crudely scratched at times for a gritty, textured aesthetic. Inspired by new and old journalistic-style photography, as well as cabinet cards and children's picture books, I spend hours scouring eBay and flea markets to gather the studies for my subjects that then influence the physical traits of the children in the works, as well as their surrounding objects, clothing and furniture. A collector of photography for many years, I am constantly inspired by the likes of Shelby Lee Adams, Mary Ellen Mark, Roger Ballen, and E. J. Bellocq.
"Seeing real people, real expressions - moments of a hard life captured on people's faces - becomes inspirational to me."
