Kristi’s most current series consists of bird portraits. Each is of a single bird, centrally located on a decorative background. The birds are an amalgam of extinct species and the various breeds that inhabit Vancouver. Each one is given its own distinct personality, much like the animal characters in children’s fables. Make-believe birds are a reminder of childhood days spent exploring a living world of imagination. Before we learned their names, they were magical flying creatures. Circles appear as a prominent feature in each painting in order to add an ornamental effect and create a playful mood with a touch of dark humor. The distinctive palette is used to achieve an enchanting and dream-like atmosphere, juxtaposing soft, pastel tones against golds, bold reds, yellows and blues.
