| About the Artist |
In my work, I am inspired by true individualism. Especially those whose self-determinism defied odds. Although some of my subjects are known, I am more interested in the obscure. These subjects: scientists, artists, musicians, writers, philosophers, friends and family, are people whom I admire, both for their work and their character.
I find inspiration in black and white photography postcards, foreign and art magazines and am indebted to google images for archaic finds. I love color like the expressionists and find the purity of primary color intoxicating. Every piece, I strive for more intense play between complimentary colors, never using the color black. In the mixed-media pieces, I use caran d’ache neocolor II water-soluble wax pastels and acrylic on unstretched canvas. The oil paintings are on canvas, linen or wood.
The subject dictates the form, ranging from traditional portraits, to conceptual, to participatory installation art.

Based on Vincent Moriarty, from Knightstown, Valentia Island in County Kerry, Ireland. His is known as the town crazy, ever since he lost his wits from heavy drinking. He no longer drinks, keeps his own (albeit trash-laden) house and like the watchtower behind him, keeps an eye on Knightstown. |

The Curie Family Investigate the Crab Nebula
2006 60 x 80 |
|
oil on linen
The Curie Family Investigate the Crab Nebula Marie Curie (1867-1934), Pierre Curie (1859-1906) Irene Joliot-Curie (1897-1956), Frederic Joliot-Curie (1900-1958) The magnetic field near the Crab Nebula is 900 billion times stronger than the Earth's. The average density of Crab Nebula material is the same as a sugar cube containing every American automobile. Imagine the weight of 100 million cars in a one-centimeter cube. This same density is found in every atomic nucleus in your body.
