Fregny Lorenzo was born in Ranchuelo, Villa Clara CUBA in the year of 1973, he resided in this city from 1973 to 2003, thereafter he moved to Toronto Canada where he continued his work. His love of art was strongly influenced by the period during the difficult conflict of human rights . As a result, his art reflects an organic feeling that stems directly from his love for freedom. The wishes and fights of Fregny’s arts is thus transposed on to the canvas and communicated to the viewer.
The members of the Lorenzo family of origin have always had a wide interest in the arts and Dance. This exposure to the arts at an young age had an impact on Fregny's evolution as an artist. The Lorenzo family home was always filled with stimulating people; various artists, musicians, dancers would gather there to share their ideas. The abundant creative energy in his immediate environment, not only set in motion his own development as an artist, but, in subsequent years, allowed him to draw on a rich storehouse of experience and infuse his paintings with it. Humor and playfulness were also an integral part of his family culture and as a result his paintings are full of bright and colourful figures.
Dance has and continues to play a prominent part in inspiring Fregny’s art. As a Dancer himself, he has played in a variety of theatres in Cuba. This affinity to Dance has helped him develop a broader scope and increased flexibility in his thinking. As a young man in Toronto, Fregny was fortunate to live in areas where there were many young people of different nationalities who welcomed him with open arms. The zestful energy, sounds and colors of the neighbourhoods nourished his heart and soul. His exposure and immersion into these cultures was further enriched by his experience of Dance over the years. His openness to various ethnic cultures and his eclectic appreciation of various forms of dance speaks for itself in his paintings. His love of folklore has encouraged him to go beyond certain borders whereas Classical Ballet has taught him to stay within certain boundaries.
The world according to Fregny is a world unlike no other, his paintings contain a diary of images that he releases into the atmosphere. Many are imbued with an expression of happiness and freedom. Fregny has been strongly influenced by the contemporary Cubans artist and in his dance. Their uninhibited use of sights, sounds and colors, their non-conformity, has led him along the path to his own highly personal expressive dialogue with life.
