I was born and raised in Minneapolis Minnesota and have continued to call this my home since 1973. Art, and painting specifically have been my salvation, my learning and my basis of exploration for how to live. While buddhism, yoga, and bodywork shape my interactions, the people that come into my life and surround me in a continual force of energy, provide my inspiration. I find I can never have enough and welcome thoughts, suggestions, and insights into how to make myself better as a human and as an artist. My painting is not static in style or invention and draws from observing the movement and the thoughts of people I see and speak with. The colors and shapes, stylized and often exaggerated, serve to fulfill an interpretation of moments, as opposed to photographing exactness in light shape shadow and environment. We all have stories to share, whether it be in the form of a novel or a different viewpoint, our expressions are valid and when shared can help another in their journey. Whether frolic, or drama, delight, or intensity, talk or touch, we are the source of positive strength for each other. It is my sincere hope that in viewing the work, it helps to bring compassion and an alternative view of beauty to the seer.

I am an expressionist oil painter whose work explores the psychological world through the figure. The saturated blends of color and exaggerated movement of the subjects break open commonplace living into raw expression.
I adore the shape and the ability the human body has to move, and the strength the human soul has to adapt and endure. I explore the differing consolations and needs of human beings, and our individual and collective connections to the world.
With intensity and devotion I feel a need to recycle the energy and materials around us. This includes finding, or buying secondhand, much of what I use to paint with. It employs a constant discovery of what lays buried in our inner self and what we use to heal. The content of my work involves the need to care for our body and minds as we need to care for our earth and its resources, as I have found the health of humans is inextricably linked to the energy that makes up our world as a system. I try to weave beauty through the painting of postures and movements of the body that leave me in awe, strike me with feeling, or express an emotion.
The viewer is invited to become a voyeur into my insight and outward vision. The paintings are a visual expression of my life, my need to flee from powerful situations and my survival depending on coming to terms with that which has been experienced, and my desire to capture the body in motion and at play. Sometimes the figures jump from their environment and sometimes they melt, the struggle of being human is displayed by the subjects pictured in my work.
I thoughtfully take on commissioned work. If you have comments regarding this work or would like to be included on my mailing list for future shows, please contact me at my email address.

Ordinary Appetites
2005 oil on canvas 56 cm * 71 cm |
|
A woman can be robust and lovely.
As humans -
we have passion, to eat, to move, to love, to live, our body reflects how much we are able to do, and how much more we want. An ordinary appetite can be huge and I tried to reflect that here. That huge can reflect zeal and lust and beauty.

Lost Little Girl
2007 oil paint, pastel and chalk on canvas 45 cm * 35 cm |
|
a little girl passed by my house at dusk crying for her mama, lost, scared, not knowing her full name or her mothers, where she lived or where she was at. The only real knowledge of her I had was that she had been dropped off the school bus at the wrong stop and that she was scared. The expression in her eyes and the trust she had to place in me were touching. It was a feeling of being lost all of us experience, and with the help of the police, I was so grateful to be able to put her back in the arms of her mama. |
