Couch Potato Farm
2005 |
|
"Couch potato farm" is an interactive virtual life video installation, which models a virtual ecosystem that watches television and surveillance video. The work is designed to tease the users of the system into thinking about our continual passive exposure to television, and our passive participation in ubiquitous video surveillance. The installation is an exploration of a heterogeneous virtual ecosystem, with two kinds of virtual lifeform - a cellular automaton and mobile creatures that evolve characteristics through a genetic algorithm. The documentation video can be seen on my web page or on Google Videos. |
Shibboleths
2004 |
|
Shibboleths is an interactive computer installation that allows users to explore cultural boundaries in speech. It does this by allowing users to browse a geographical database of people pronouncing different "shibboleths" - words that are indicators of national or cultural origin. The title comes from the English word which itself is derived from a bible story in which one tribe could tell impostors of another tribe from their pronunciation of the word "shibboleth" as "sibboleth".
Originally written in a custom animation and sequencing language "fibonacci" shibboleth is now available on the internet. |
Fingerprint landscape: Sunset
2004 |
|
One of a series of "digital" prints that consist of landscapes made from the artist's own fingerprint. An exploration of landscape and identity. |
Subway Life Cycle
2004 Computer video animation 2min 22s |
|
A creation myth for the New York subway system. In this animation of the subway map, the lines appear, dance around and finally wriggle off the screen. A counterpart to the physical sculpture "Quipu". See the video on my web site or Google Videos. |
Quipu II
2006 Knotted nylon |
|
A knotted string version of the London underground map. An exploration of information representation inspired by the Incan quipus- used for record keeping as they had no writing. This is also a meditation on the 7/7 bombings. A previous piece "Quipu" made shortly after 9/11 showed the NY subway map. Quipu II is intended to be touched and is now part of the UK "Blind Art Foundation" permanent collection. See also my video animation of the NYC subway map "Subway Life Cycle" |
