About the Artist

ARTISTIC APPROACH

As an Art Photographer, I use traditional and alternative photographic processes including chemical-based colour darkroom, cyanotypes, and mixed media. I create abstracts and concept-based photographic compositions rooted in narrative or thought. The motivation behind my work is the creation of aesthetics which will uplift, invigorate, or inspire the viewer, achieved through the visual language of line, form, and colour. I want to engage the onlooker and evoke a personal response, to inspire a thought, idea, or impulse. Within the creative and often exploratory process of my abstract works, I am creating new realities. My intention is for the viewer to enjoy the initial visual appearance but as well to think about the piece as an entity and come to a personal interpretation of meaning.

Blood & Energy, Orb Series

2007
Digitally Enlarged C-type Photogram
59 x 84 cm

Blood & Energy, Orb Series
Cameraless C-type Photograph digitally enlarged on fine art archival paper, from the “Orb Series”, which realizes the concept of transformation of matter and energy at will. Carefully considered use of light and shadow, colour and form turn an object into a new and altogether different entity, with the purpose of connecting the viewer on an aesthetic level. The orbs in this series represent Man’s ability to create and control energy, and to move matter in space by his determination. No camera is used, only light, objects, and photosensitive paper.

Hold It Still, Orb Series
This is the first photograph I created in my “Orb Series”, which realizes the concept of transformation of matter and energy at will.

1940

2007
C-type Luminogram
59 x 84 cm

1940
Camera-less photograph using only light and photosensitive paper, light is bent and formed to create the resultant luminogram. Colour and shape are used to evoke feelings of the 1940's era.

Purple, Orb Series

2007
Digitally Enlarged C-type Photogram
59 x 84 cm

Purple, Orb Series
This camera-less photograph was created using only light, photosensitive paper, and found objects with the intention of creating a new reality. Each viewer interprets it uniquely and personally for meaning as it is intended to engage the viewer's imagination.

Sound

2006
Photograph on Fine Art Archival Paper
59 x 59 cm

Photograph of golden lines of light captured in motion. This piece was inspired by music and the desire to reach a high level aesthetic by representing the harmony of sound with light.

PLAY

2007
Ditally Enlarged C-type Photogram
59 x 84 cm

PLAY
Inspired by the inherited collection of my Grandmother's scarves and costume jewelry, "Play" is the culmination of a body of work in which I set out to emulate through emotive colours and shapes, my Grandmother's energy and spirit and the "game" she "played" in life. Although the colours are bright and cheery conveying the fun and warm aspects of her personality, there is a deliberate reposeful quality, almost snapshot-like, which conveys her collected and gentle nature as a person. In a broader context, it reflects the game Man is playing on this planet and the philosophy that Man is a spirit who enters the material world with the purpose of playing a game. In this case the game my Grandmother played was wife, mother and homemaker. Her life's work was family. In "Play" the two main orbs are my Grandmother and Grandfather and the smaller ones are their children. Using photosensitve paper and the light in the darkroom, with found objects, no camera or negative were used. Following the tradition of Concrete Photography, only the photographic process itself was used to create a new reality, through thought and experimentation, the resultant photograph an object in its own right to be celebrated.

Candy

2007
C-type Photogram Digital Enlargement
