Richard paints in oil, on copper panels that he makes himself. Copper is a wonderful support, and cross-links with oil paint to form a very strong bond. In addition, this chemical reaction keeps the paint looking very fresh. Of course, there's a downside which in this case is the expense of copper sheet. Still, he thinks it is worth the effort to produce archival works.

Murdock graduated from Pratt Institute, in the days when nothing existed in the art world but Abstract Expressionism. So while he did attend art school, he is largely self-taught, or at least self-directed. His technique is derived from that of the Little Dutch Masters, although his lighting tends to have some of Caravaggio in it. Murdock continues to expand his education, and most recently he has been studying with Graydon Parrish.
