Using digital photographs of New York City, this is one in a series of work that uses utility and xacto blades as a mode of drawing into layered photographs. The process of cutting and peeling is used to subvert the two-dimensional and pictorial qualities of photography.© 2008 stephen conway

This, and subsequent work below embraces the "noise" or "corrupted image file" appearance as a final "work", these images are the result of the interpolation/interpretation (or lack of ) that occurs when a Microsoft Word document is forced to open in Adobe Photoshop on an Apple computer.
The process for this work starts with mining the internet for transcriptions of historical documents that are simply copied and pasted into Microsoft Word documents. Photoshop is then used to "force" open the electronic documents, and the respective gray noise image generated. MSWord documents are saved as .docx, .rtf, and .txt formats since it seems to vary which files Photoshop is able to interpolate from document to document.
More and more paper based books and documents are rapidly making their way into various digital forms, or "green technologies". This process of making information easily accessible to many has obvious positive democratizing aspects, many of which important historical documents have made possible especially in the United States. However, the typical contemporary citizen (myself included) has either forgotten, is apathetic to, and/ or is ignorant of critical concepts and ideas held in these documents that have shaped contemporary life as we know it. This series of work further calls attention to their absence from cultural knowledge by further denegrating the information in these very documents as a visual noise generating resource. Titles of the original source documents are provided as a reference so that they may also be used as a starting point for further cultural and historical inquiry. |
