Born in Washington DC in 1942, Jalaliyyih Quinn began painting and drawing in early childhood. She began formal studies at the age of nine, with a British Artist Doreen Penson.
Always an imaginative child, she experienced something transcendent during the process of painting. This quality of transcendence during the act of painting endures to the present.
In 1967 she met the artist James Van Dyk and moved to New York. Van Dyk challenged her to paint from her feelings, from the subconscious mind. It forever changed how she worked. Jalaliyyih began to work primarily with watercolors, the only medium swift enough to catch the evanescent colors of the mind. Van Dyk introduced her to sacred arts from around the world. Geometry, always an attraction, now had a purpose in expressing that which is eternal, sacred.
Jalaliyyih Quinn completed her MFA at the University of Colorado, Boulder. She then was head of the art department at Cuttington University College in Liberia, from 1985 until 1990 and the civil war which forced her to flee.
Quinn noted that in the west people are known for their ideas, their professions, where as in Africa, peoples’ humanness of greatest importance. As a result the human figure re entered her work. The figures became inclusive of all the peoples of the world.
In August of 1990 she began to live in China. Quinn has been fortunate to be able to teach Art, Modern Western Painting, and Oral English. From 1995 to 1997 she was Artist in Residence at Lu Xun Fine Art Academy. Teaching Oral English has also been a creative endeavor, using dramatic performances as the primary teaching method.
In the summer of 2004 Jalaliyyih Quinn returned to the USA, and lives in Longmont Colorado.
Presently she teaches in the Fine Art Program at Front Range Community College and has private students.
The unity of human kind is a frequent theme in Quinn’s work. It appears in the figures,
Their relationship one to another and it appears in the visual reference to science,
pointing out our shared physical atomic origins.
Jalaliyyih Quinn believes that the actions of the artist in daily life and the work of the artist in the chosen medium are one opus. She has chosen to live abroad for the past 19 years, feeling that even one life bonding in friendship at the grass roots level, can and does make a difference toward peace. Quinn has wanted her art to further that which is of the spirit; that which is unifying. She has said, “If I paint the circle of light, the unity of all mankind, I must live that life.â€
Jalaliyyih Quinn has held solo exhibitions in China, in Shenyang, Chongqing, and Beijing, and in Liberia, in Bong County. In the USA, she has had solo exhibitions in New York, Vermont and Colorado.
In 1997 Quinn Received a Special Award in Shenyang for the combining of Eastern and Western painting techniques in her art.
In 1994 she received the Friendship Award in Beijing China, the highest award given to a Foreigner.

| 关于此艺术家 |
Whether I migrate through ideas or they migrate through me, I do not know.
Ideas of the unity of all life do permeate my paintings,
and are indeed guidance in how I try to live my life.
There is unity of the self, with the eternal self, the soul.
We human beings are one family, and do not know it yet.
There is the fundamental unity of all life forms on the earth...
We know we are made from the elemental dust of exploded stars.
That is our atomic unity with the substance of the cosmos.
The talks with my father, so many years ago
particles into energy, and energy into matter
neutrinos permeating our beings,
and the wonder of our physical existence,
manifesting the beauty of that which is Essential,
lead me into the world of atoms smashing
strings in formation, and the creation of matter.
Between the Revealed Word and the discoveries of science
there can be no conflict in pursuit of truth.
Humanity is in turmoil.
We are passing through the heart of darkness,
It is documented graphically and we feed upon it.
I choose to paint not the panorama of destruction
but the Fundamental Unity, underlying our Life.
