My work focuses on the history of a group of first immigrants, those West Africans who were kidnapped and brought into the dizzying seas of the Atlantic; more acutely the unfinished voyage of those who did not make the crossings. Such studies also include those who continue to perish in its depths – the contemporary horror of present day West Africans who are engulfed by these same waters as they trek to the idealist coasts of European territories. My work wishes not to focus on sought destinies, weather forced or enforced, but the sea itself as a living community whose Abyssal planes harbor the distilled souls of these soldiers. What of their unrest, beneath the pressures of the Atlantic? How can fictional odysseys and confrontational installations explore the narrative of the ignored? |
