II.Creative and Scholarly Activity

2007 • Launch of new book published by Firefly Books, Graphic Witness, is an art history book about the work of wordless novelists and artists Frans Masereel, Lynd Ward, Giacomo Patri and Laurence Hyde.
• Launch of new book titled Images from the Neocerebellum published by the Porcupine’s Quill a collection of dream images from my dream diary with an afterword by Jungian scholar Daryl Sharpe M.A. publisher and general editor of Inner City Books.
• A Glimpse Down the Rabbit Hole by Richard Coxford, Spring, Issue Number 7, Bibliographica
Coxford writes about my work on the Cheshire Cat Press, Lewis Carroll books.
• The Alcuin Society – Amphora, Journal of fine press printing No. 145 February 2007, article written by Dr. Marnie Parsons about my lectures and workshop as a guest artist for the St. John’s Newfoundland Wayzgoose.
• February 6, 2007 - Lecture at the Toronto Reference Library in conjunction with Keep Toronto Reading. Altered Books – Artists Reinvent the Book a talk with Professors, Peter Sramek and myself, moderated by Philip Marchand, book critic for the Toronto Star.
• Saturday March 24th, 2007, University College, University of Toronto, The William Morris Society of Canada, Symposium: In the Steps of William Morris. I gave a talk about my work as a book artist and the influence of William Morris on my practice.
• DA - Journal of the Printing Arts — Number 60, Spring / Summer 2007
wrote an article for the section titled “A Rogue’s Gallery of the Canadian Book and Printing Arts” also provided an original wood engraving for inclusion.
• Spring 2007 Journal - I wrote a book review to be published by the Papers of the Bibliographical Society of Canada edited by Jennifer J. Conner, Ph.D. Memorial University of Newfoundland. The article was a book review of the new publication on Alexander Anderson 1775-1870 Wood engraver and Illustrator: An Annotated Bibliography. 3 vols. By Jane R. Pomeroy.
• April 28th 2007 Wayzgoose – Grimsby Public Art Gallery, Grimsby, Ontario – show and sale of artists books. Annual publication of the limited edition Wayzgoose Anthology of which I submit hand printed work to each year.

2006 • Firefly Books contracts me to write Graphic Witness, an art history book about the work of wordless novelists and artists Frans Masereel, Lynd Ward, Giacomo Patri and Laurence Hyde.
• Porcupine’s Quill invites me to be Graphic editor for a new series of books.
• Porcupine’s Quill agrees to publish my new book Images from the Neocerebellum.
• July 16, 2006 – McMichael Canadian Collection – visiting artist- presentation
• September 15th – December 31st 2006 – Impressions on Paper, An Exhibition of Woodcuts and Wood Engravings at the Art of Writing Galleries, Leacock Museum in Orillia, Ontario.
• July 22nd 2006 Letterpress/Hot Metal Seminar at Don Black Linecasting. I demonstrated wood engraving and printing techniques for letterpress printers.
• November 20th – 26th, 2006 - I was the visiting Artist for the first St.John’s Newfoundland Wayzgoose. This consisted of a workshop at the St. Michael’s Printshop., a lecture at The Rooms titled “Re-inventing the Book, or Not!” and a lecture to the WANL (Writers’ Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador) titled “What Writers Need to Know About Book Design”.

2005 • Firefly Books publishes The Woodcut Artists’ Handbook, a practical handbook for beginner and advanced artists that covers: choosing wood, using sharpening and selecting tools, getting the best results from paper and ink, colour printing and much more. Over 50 artists work are featured with detailed descriptions on how they create their art.
• Open Studio invited me to a strategic planning session with other affiliated guests from the art community. The planning session was facilitated by Judy Wolfe with support from the Ontario Arts Council. The focus of the session was to hear our views pertaining to the strategic direction of Open Studio; namely, the opportunities and challenges facing visual arts organizations in general and Open Studio’s challenges for future growth and renewal.
• In March I gave a lecture to the Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild titled “Reinventing the book…or not?” This lecture focused on the changing role of the book in our culture.
• Cabbagetown Annual Juried Art Show: Second Prize
• David Mirvish Books on Art: Launch for my new book: The Woodcut Artists Handbook and concurrent month-long exhibition of a number of my wood engravings from the book The Woodcut Artists Handbook and the Inverted Line.
• OCAD Library Book-signing of The Woodcut Artists Handbook in September
• Gaspereau Press in Kentville Nova Scotia, Symposium on the health of Small Press Printing in Canada,invited as exhibitor November
• Interviews on radio and book-signings in Owen Sound and Collingwood
• December spoke to the Markham Arts Group

2004 • I wrote a whole issue 53 of the DA (Devil’s Artisan) on the topic of wood engraving, The DA is a scholarly journal for the Printing Arts, published by Porcupine’s Quill, Erin, Ontario.
2003 • I worked with Andrew Steeves of Gaspereau Press in Nova Scotia illustrating John Terpstra’s poetry book Disarmament and have continued to freelance for them providing illustrations for their various award winning publications.
2002 • The publication of Ink, Paper Board Lead by Coach House Press and the accompanying exhibition Ink, Paper Board Lead toured in 2003 and was featured at the Toronto Reference Library, Queens university, Douglas Library and the Macdonald Stewart Art Centre in Guelph.
• Worked with Neil Gaiman and Dr. Jack Zipes (director of European Studies at the University of Minnesota) to create a handmade edition of Gaiman’s Snow Glass Apples. I created 12 hand-printed wood engravings and Dr. Zipes wrote the introduction and I designed the limited edition.
2001 • Worked with Neil Gaiman to produce a limited edition of his radio play Murder Mysteries. I created 12 hand-printed wood engravings for this edition. Published the book under Biting Dog Press established by Michelle Walker, David Dinsmore and myself to print fine limited edition books.
2000 • I was hired as a Book Designer for Firefly Books in Richmond Hill, Ontario.
• Porcupine’s Quill published The Inverted Line. This book includes reproductions of my wood engravings, my commentary on how or why I created them, and a bibliography on the subject of wood engraving.
• Canada Council Visiting Artist - University College of the Cariboo, Kamloops, British Columbia. I was invited to set up their press ‘Cariboo Bookworks Press’ and I gave several lectures about the book arts and the printing of Artists’ books.

1. Private Press

The following books are hand printed books that feature the work of George Walker. Many are printed and published by George Walker. Others are printed by private presses who have used the artwork of George Walker.


2007 The Book of Hours– A wordless novel in woodengravings.

2005 The Raven – A new edition of Poe’s classic tale illustrated with original wood engravings and printed in an edition of 65 numbered copies. The introduction is by Michelle Walker.

2003 The Transformed Mouse – written by Jack Ketchum who based this story on a retelling of a 2nd century A.D. parable from the Panchatantra. Printed and illustrated with original wood engravings impressed on Japanese paper in a limited edition of 250 copies.

2002 Snow Glass-Apples - written by Neil Gaiman and printed in a limited edition of 250 signed and numbered copies. 12 original wood engravings by George Walker printed on handmade gampi paper, illustrate this play for voices.

2001 Wayzgoose Anthology -Annually published through the Grimsby Public Art Gallery.

Murder Mysteries - written by Neil Gaiman and printed in a limited edition of 250 signed and numbered copies. 12 original wood engravings by George Walker printed on handmade gampi paper, illustrate this play for voices.

Eroes on the Thames - by Bram Stoker. This book was handprinted for the Bram Stoker society of Dublin Ireland. Contains 6 original wood engravings by George Walker and an introduction by John Moore who is the president of the Bram Stoker Society.

2000 Wayzgoose Anthology -Annually published through the Grimsby Public Art Gallery.
George Walker has contributed a hand printed signature to this limited edition annual book since it was founded in 1981.

Wayzgoose Anthology - Annually published through the Grimsby Public Art Gallery.

Ontario College of Art Printmaking Anthology (OCAP) George Walker has coordinated the annual anthology from 1986 to the present and contributed to this anthology since 1984.It is a collection of hand printed works of art by professional artists and OCA students printed in a limited edition of 100 copies.

1997 In the Valley of the Shadow is a hand printed book of engravings with an introduction by George Walker. To commemorate the centenary of the publishing date of Dracula,Walker has illustrated Bram Stokers’ short story In the Valley of the Shadow and printed it in a limited edition.

1996 Van Gogh’s Ear - unique Artists’ book with sculptural ear and sound electronics in a box.Purchased by the National Library of Canada for their Rare Book collection.

2005 CBC Radio - April 30 2005, CBC 99.1 Fresh Air morning show. Was interviewed live on air by host Jeff Goode in CBC studio before Wayzgoose early Saturday morning.
Discussed past present and future of letterpress printing and Biting Dog Press and my new book The Wood Cut Artist’s Handbook to be released Fall 2005.

The Albion -Printers Journal published in Great Britain. Thirty three, vol. 11, No. 3 October 1987. My wood engraving appears on the cover. I Marry The Earth & The Waiting Room were reviewed by Roger Burford Mason. An original print of mine is included as an insert. A review written by the Walkers, (with wife Michelle) of Frans Masereel ‘s book The Passionate Journey is published in this issue also.

3. Entries in Reference Works

The Best of Printmaking, An International Collection (1997). – The artwork was selected by Lynne Allen and Phyllis McGibbon with an introduction by Ruth Weisberg. Published by Rockport Publishers, Quarry Books. My print ‘Collective Ideas” is featured on page 50 of this book. The print featured in this book uses the computer as a tool for generating part of the image for hand printing.

END GRAIN - Contemporary Wood Engraving in North America (1995)- Barbarian Press-with essays by Patricia Ainslie and Paul Ritscher - this book contains impressions taken directly from blocks made by George Walker and has a short bio of the artist listed.

Structure of the Visual Book The Revised and Expanded edition (1993) by Keith A. Smith. George Walker’s book ACROPHONY is featured on pg. 33 (B&W photo) Keith discusses the many forms and concepts in the making of artists’ books.

1998 Canadian Ephemera Society: Lecture on Victorian printing technology at the Osbourne Collection in the Lillian Smith Library, Toronto.

Lewis Carroll Society of Canada: Lecture on the printing of Alice In Wonderland and Victorian printing techniques. The lecture included a look at how the first Canadian edition of Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland was printed.

2004 DA53 - Tools and Techniques of Wood Engraving (Devil’s Artisan), a scholarly journal for the Printing Arts, published by Porcupine’s Quill. I researched and wrote this issue all abut relief printing techniques and its history.

VII. Teaching
