| Sandrine Elberg |
| |
|
Born in 1978 at Versailles, France
Lives and works in Paris
 |
| |
| About the Artist |
Sandrine Elberg employs an incisive eye and plenty of humor in her
"faux-réaliste" portraits of young ladies. Even if the subjects are
generally in their own homes, in their living room, or even in their bathrooms,
their appearance and general attitude may be considered either provoking, or
comic to the point of absurdity, or both. The banality of the surrounding decor
only accentuates the eccentric attitudes of the characters. What are these women
doing? Why do they appear to be playing a role that has strictly nothing to do
with their surroundings? Seduction verging on aggression plays against the
burlesque in the work of Sandrine Elberg. What do these photographs intend to
tell us about these women? Even if the artists doesn't hesitate to employ either
of these tropes, she never offers us a clear and simple response. The narratives
are rich but incomplete, so ambiguity sets the rules of engagement, and leaves
room for the viewer's subjectivity to creep its way into the work.
