关于此艺术家

I make art because I believe the images I receive have something to offer, and have always felt compelled to draw them down. When I have something in me to express, pencil on paper is what I imagine first. It’s a direct medium, and has complete creative control.

A piece has turned out really well when it captures the emotional essence of the narrative, it has immediacy, spontaneity and movement. These desired qualities rarely follow conventions I learned in university. My artwork titles are simply descriptive of the subject and its narrative.
The artists that have freed possibilities in my own work are Frank Auerbach’s intensity; Willem De Kooning’s losing the figure in his medium; and Francesco Goya’s dark visions. What inspires me most is to find out how it will turn out. That image in my head translated into an artwork, I think it’s that potential that stirs me into creating more art.
Subject matter wise I don’t always know what they mean, they’re from the subconscious! The overriding emotion I was conveying was fear but it was searching towards the spiritual. Now the main feeling is mystical experience. Through art I can express such intense experiences that I wouldn’t show in my everyday life. To have these moments that transcend the everyday recorded in art, I see that as a great legacy to aspire to.

My goal is to be an exhibiting artist. I’m always searching for new, deeper and higher levels of experience, and this searching is reflected in my drawing. When I get into a flow and come out the other end having created something new... they’re moments to live for. And at those times when the viewer feels that way too… it’s just such a great feeling.
