Global cultures, ancient symbolism, indigenous world views, the Earth’s ecosystems and my own world travel deeply inform the subject matter in my paintings. My new works are heavily rooted in depicting neolithic and indigenous imagery invoking ancient Meso-American symbols and natural forms. I bring together ancient symbols, rediscovered indigenous Mayan writings- a reinvention of thought and history. These paintings convey a system of mythological pattern - solid elemental abstract shapes that are linked up with Mayan symbols found in the last four remaining ancient Mayan books or codices. This work is a unique synesthesia, crossing senses or genres, and describe a personal narrative of my own Mexican-American heritage and revive writings and symbols of long ago on materials that live again. |
