Born in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, April 1952, I remember from a very early age being interested in capturing my surroundings through drawing on any blank paper I could find. The dog asleep on the rug, the living room full of furniture my mother or brother relaxing watching the TV in the evening, my left hand holding objects, a pair of shoes, the dining table and chairs… anything that would stay still long enough for me to capture a likeness.

I left home at the age of 16, I lived and worked as a waiter in a country hotel for 9 months some 10 miles from Doncaster, I had always dreamed of travelling having never been abroad, so I joined the Merchant Navy and worked my way around the world for 2 years, a wonderful experience in many ways, especially in survival, though soon realising if I’m going to continue to survive I’m going to have to get a career, the words from a great influence in my life echoed in my ear - my art teacher Selwyn Lloyd said, go to art college Graham – so I did, in 1970 I went to enrol at Doncaster College of Art.
but alas, I didn’t have the qualifications to enter the pre diploma fine art course, my portfolio however got me onto the Graphic Design course where I specialised in illustration, I graduated two years later with Distinction and gained employment as a junior designer/illustrator at the South Yorkshire Times and White Rose Press in Mexborough, in 1975 I went to work at an agency in Manchester, in 1976, back in Doncaster, I co-founded a partnership in graphics, married in 1978 and began a family, also helping to run a business and the advent of computers I lost touch with art and illustration.
Some 17 years and 3 children later, I left the partnership to form my own business, it was successful as a business for several years but something was missing, I was not fulfilled, so now a single parent at the age of 55, I decided to let go of the graphics industry in 2005 and get back to the ‘real’ me and art.
In the last 2 years or so, I have spent more time painting, coming from the graphics industry I am fortunate to be able to work in most media (oils, acrylics, watercolour, gouache, pastels, pen and ink) and cover just about any subject, my leaning at present is towards the huge subjects of land, sea and skyscapes, but plan to include still life, figure work, portrait and contemporary abstracts. My sense of humour has also produced many cartoons and caricatures in the past. I also have a love of typography.
Influences:
Rowland Hilda, John Blockley, David Curtis, Lucian Freud,
Trevor Chamberlain, Monet,
Zhaoming Wu, Will Wilson,
John Singer Sargent, Klimt,
Egon Schiele, Gustave Courbet, Boris Vallejo, Frank Frazetta to name but a few.

| 教育程度与个人自传 |
I was far from being a scholar at school, I always seemed to struggle with academic subjects, the teachers gave me good marks for any illustration work, average on most everything else, in the case of maths, much less than average – in fact I remember one maths teacher telling me not to waste his time and go to the art room where he knew I enthused and thrived, I also enjoyed subjects like metalwork, woodwork and technical drawing, it seemed I was a visual and practical kind of learner.
My skill at drawing was acknowledged by one and all ‘especially my mother of course’, school friends would offer to do my theory work if I agreed to illustrate their exercise books – it seemed like a good idea at the time.
