Wm Barth Osmundsen

About the Artist

As a pre-schooler my father's portrait of my mother was the most riveting image I can recall. Attempting to recreate this portrait with my new birthday present I was disappointed only to end up with a funny looking face on a skinny neck.
I continued to paint with my father every year from then on but as a teenager I became fasinated with the Greeks and later Rodin. When I attended Trinity in Texas my Portrait Sculpture caught fire.
Enlisting in the Navy I was billeted as an Illustrator-Draftsman and created Artwork for my command. During a Seagoing Operation from Norfolk VA to the Coast of Turkey I had my first taste of the Sea and my youthful introduction to the Sea and my grandfathers immagery fell into place.
Later after ending my 4 year Enlistment I joined Portraits Inc and was drawn to another Seagoing adventure during Operation Sail 76. At that event I sailed onboard Norway's Tall Ship Christian Radich and began my ongoing series "Bronzes From the Sea".

Osprey Fishes

2004
Bronze on Cherry Wood
Wing Span 65cm X Osprey Length 28cm

The Osprey Fishes a large mouth Bass is the subject of William Barth Osmundsen’s third major bird motif, other bronzes include “The Eagles Flight” and “The Flight of the Terns”. The Osprey is sometimes referred to as the Sea Eagle and like its land based cousin, the eagle, is a noble bird with a wing span which often reaches 6 feet . The Osprey is a raptor with a feathery, disoriented, almost absent minded professor look. Like the eagle the Osprey mates for life, building their nests in nautical lights and bells. The US Coast Guard allows the Osprey to build their nests in these nautical markers. The birds housing often reaches 10 feet in height only to be evacuated by the Coast Guard for cleaning after the fledgling young osprey earn their wings. The following year the landlord tenant relationship continues.

John Paul Jones raises the fir

1996
Bronze on Teak
Ht. 65cm x Width (at flag) 50cm

The John Paul Jones story is too fantastic to be fiction. Born to a Scottish gardener, John Paul killed a man, as he sailed around the world. Adding the surname Jones, John Paul sought anonymity. He was a dandy and somewhat of a Revolutionary War ‘Rock Star’. A self taught War Ship designer he went to sea onboard the Ranger with one of the very first versions of what was to become the American Flag and single handedly attacked the English coast. A protégée of Benjamin Franklin he was given the Bonhomme Richard, named for ’Poor Richard’s (Almanac) ’, to captain. He engaged the Serapis in one of the fieriest sea battles ever fought. Jones is considered an American Nelson but had to leave the colonies to become an Admiral in the Russian Navy. He died in 1792 in a French apartment, just 12 days before official papers from Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson would once again put him to work as an maritime emissary to the US; supporting Jones’ original desire for a standing Navy, which was disband, on Washington’s recommendation after the Revolutionary War. Buried in a lead-lined vat of Rum, President Teddy Roosevelt found Jones in France 100 years later and had him interred in Annapolis, MD where, at last, John Paul Jones officially became the father of the US Navy. How do we know what John Paul Jones looked like? …. Sculpture is the answer. Houdon the great French Portrait Sculptor created a Bust of Jones by introduction of Benjamin Franklin who along with Thomas Jefferson and George Washington were subjects of Jean d’Antonine Houdon. Houdon an eminent portraitist was so exact in his rendition of his subjects that measurements were taken from the bust and compared to the 100 year old pickled corpse of John Paul. Sculptor Bill Osmundsen found a copy of the Houdon Bust in the Portsmouth, NH ‘John Paul Jones House’ and was allowed to copy it at that location before beginning this statue.
