| About the Artist |
"Art is my soul…
I try to do it every day."
"Beyond all things, my art is of this earth. Through my eclectic mix of primal lines, basic shapes, and vibrant colors, I strive to achieve a spontaneous level of whimsical harmony… My imagery draws almost exclusively from imagination, with clues to ancient cultural art and playful nods to modern pop culture. I enjoy art; I enjoy this life. I want my art to make people smile. I want people to lose themselves in my art and forget about pollution, death, and taxes for just a few valuable moments. This is my mission."
-- Jim Horwat

Who Killed Biggie Smalls?
2003 Mixed Media on Masonite coming soon |
|
That summer of 2003, VH1 ran their "Biggie Smalls: Behind the Music" episode practically 3 times a day. Jim watched it. His mixed media piece is a stylized interpretation of the drama, folklore and controversy surrounding the tragic death of rap artist Biggie Smalls. |
Swinging Round w Humpty Hump
2004 Mixed Media on Masonite |
|
This piece graphically interprets the humerous lyrics to Digital Underground's 1990 hit rap single "The Humpty Dance". The painting contains a visual illustration in the top right corner of the classic lyric "People say you look like MC Hammer on crack, Humpty!" |
Catheter Quarter
2004 Mixed Media on Masonite |
|
In 2004 Jim completed a 4 part series called "Chum Change" in which the artist graphically re-interpreted the American Penny, Nickle, Dime and Quarter. His inspiration for the series was spurred by negative comments made by his father, who noted that "flipping burgers" would make more money than excessive time spent on a painting sold for "chum change". |
Mysterious Travelers 2
2006 Acrylic on Canvas |
|
Jim likes to paint "pilots". Mysterious Travelers is an ongoing theme in which the artist combines futuristic stereotypes of "space pilots" with the simple graphic imagery of primitive nautical cultures. The series title is a friendly reference to a classic jazz album by the group Weather Report. |
Photosynthesis Helmet
2003 Acrylic on Canvas |
|
Jim is inspired and fascinated with "helmets". This piece is not a football helmet, but a human technical diagram for obtaining photosynthetic energy! |
Maggot Bear
2003 Acrylic on Canvas |
|
...inspired by the music of Miles Davis and Parliament Funkadelic, Maggot Bear was a fun piece which captured the moment of a sweltering hot summer in June of 2003. |
Ocean Odyssey
2002 Acrylic on Canvas coming soon |
|
One of the artist's first early paintings. It's working title is "Unbreakable Compass", an inspirational illustration for faith in the face of adversity. |
