My work explores the conflicts between the natural world and the man-made. I focus on the results of a throw away society, the disruption of fragile eco. systems and the commercial manipulation of life forms. My practice follows along tradition of artists depicting the natural world, going back to earliest man. The use of animals and nature based imagery has been used to express, fears, theories, belief systems and ideals. The portrayal of this subject in contemporary art continues to reflect the concerns and concepts of the moment: genetics, environmental and ecological issues.
To produce my work I choose to shift through abandoned objects and the surfeit of ever present junk, collecting items I have a response to.
I also spend time sketching and studying various animals and landscapes. Then I endeavour to blend the found objects, these are assembled into sculptural forms, using various techniques and methods.
The purpose of my work is to highlight the plight of the natural word
in all its richness and diversity. To consider the irreplaceable and the disposable, hopefully provoke consideration and respect as caretakers of our environment.
I am inspired by artists
Patrica Piccinini, Alex Rockman, Nichola Hinks & Lynne Hull to name afew plus the writing of Octavia Butler, ancient mythology, the zoo, the British Museum and awalk in the park.
