My first series of work developed around the theme of emotions and states of being (eg ‘Too Open Too’) and led towards looking at how past memories influence present thinking (eg Long Shadows). This in turn has spurred me on to think about beliefs, memories and behaviours shared by communities (eg Noughts and Crosses), perhaps passed down or evolved and to look at events that have on one level are seen to have shaped society but on another level are typical human, sociological behaviour.
Recently I have moved to London and my work reflects my new surroundings.
Formally the work is concerned about moving the viewer’s attention from the representational content of the work to its abstract and symbolic elements. Hopefully creating an image which both makes the view think and respond on conscious and subconscious levels.

Long Shadows 1 and 2
Unframed, first format 82 x 82cm
Unframed, second format 21 x 164cm
This piece is based on how past experience can affect the present, the long shadow being the memory of past experience.
The work is painted on 4 canvases that can be arranged and joined together to make two different formats of the same painting. This is done to reflect how the mind moves from one thought to another, making connections and bringing different thoughts to mind, past and present.

Noughts and Crosses
2006 Oil on Canvas Unframed 150cm x151cm |

War is often seen as complex and strategic – a game of chess. But with our sociological understanding of how war develops from an imbalance of power, I’ve have likened it to a game of noughts and crosses. I wanted to make those who died in the July bombings in London look ‘alive’ and full of the ‘zest’ for life and the protagonists of war to look mask-like ie unable to see beyond their ideals.
