| About the Artist |
Patrick Horan's body of work situates the figure within various visual contexts, each dictating an internal narrative. What binds the series together is the presence of the human form as a model of self for the viewer to relate to. Each of the paintings are made in oils;a medium that retains a state of physical durability. The paint is worked in such a way that it's application is contrasted from fluid and loose to rugged and textured. There is a conscious polarity within this dynamic of masculine and femine whose boundaries are defined by the visual context of the figure.

Piped Illumination
2001 oil on canvas 150x180cm |
|
Piped illumination depicts a line drawing of a figure's head whoseshape is mirrored alongside her. Within this shape is an image of white noise or snow on a television screen. Spanning the wall and doorway in the background is a length of cable with light bulbs attached. Illumination is the subject of this painting whose intention it is to evoke a narrative of transcendance or enlightenment. The bulbs offer a comic strip realisation of having an idea. The mirror image could represent self consciousness, though it is rendered chaotically as white noise. Another narrative of the painting might be the communication of an idea where the message received resembles the white light but contains interference.

Fibrelight
2001 oil on canvas 180x150cm |
|
Fibrelight is an image of a foetal figure seated on an area of grass with a large round light in the centre. This image undermines the perspective of these elements evoking a surreal context for the figure to be situated in. Within the figure the fleshy image of a chicken breast in one sense, identifying with the figure, and in another making a stark contrast of surfaces with the grass. The light recessed into the grass vividly displays the shape of the figure. It represents an all prevailing technological presence again in this unlikely context of the surrounding elements. The specific choice of elements in the whole painting offer a sense of visuallizing an unspoken relationship with their logical implications.

Daylightleaves
2001 oil on canvas 150x180cm |
|
The image of a figure tumbling through the sky. She does not fall violently but tumbles through the city skyline. Within the figure is an image of leaves and foliage, between the figure and the leaves a relationship with the earth is formed. The metaphor of human clay comes to mind and further suggests our mortality and return to the earth. The figure and the skyscape combine to present a narrative in the form of a fall. It is a metaphor of mortality and represents a one way journey. The image of Icarus is reinforced by the leaves contained in the inset and as they dry the figure falls. A resolution of these loose connections finds itself in the image of a leaf gracefully blowing in the wind.

Seedfoil
2001 oil on canvas 180x150cm |
|
Seedfoil depicts the foetal image of a figure whose shape contains an image of daisy seeds. The vibrant yellow seeds represent a sense of development or growth and are in stark contrast to the metalic background image of tinfoil. The synthesized texure of the tinfoil contrasts with the organic arrangements of the seeds. They find an unlikely resolution woven together with the lines of the figure. Attaching a transcendental symbolism to white light, the tinfoil is composed of a rejection of this light or illumination. It represents a barrier or conductor of this energy where the seeds and potential of the figure is to be realised.

Roadmeat
2001 oil on canvas 150cmx180cm |
|
This painting depicts a line drawing of a figures head whose shape is mirrored alongside her. To extend this logic these ideas are a constant and can exist in groups. The figure in this painting interacts with the idea as an external body. The mirror image could represent self consciousness, though it is rendered chaotically as white noise. Another narrative of the painting might be the communication of an idea where the message received resembles the white light but contains interference.

Soildrops
2001 oil on canvas 150x180cm |
|
Soildrops depicts two figures makeing a tactile exploration of their environment. The background image is an area of barren soil. Within the figures is an image of raindrops on a window pane. These elements interact independantly but are in a sense interdependant, where the water feeds the earth and the earth feeds the people. The figures retain the potential of the water in this cycle, though, they do not use it and the soil remains barren. The painting evokes uncertain responsibilities within a familiar and natural context.
