My work often blurs the lines between painting, sculpture, drawing and printmaking. I believe drawing is the fundamental foundation of great art. The energy that line can create is incredible. I use paint for its visceral effects of color and wetness. There is a tactile, sculptural effect that can be created through the physical layering of different materials. I often play with printmaking techniques and imagery in an exploratory attempt to grapple with how the mass production of images in pop culture has effected art and the way we view it. This way of making art is largely derrived from printmaking methods learned in school.
My intellectual themes mirror my artistic methods. I am often intrigued with how we deal with the expanse of knowledge and complexity of life. Each individual has their own version of similar systems, We use words to represent and describe things that we attach our won unique meanings to. We use categories to simplify and break "it all" down. I am interested in where these categories overlap, blur together and are imperfect. I am interested in the "grey areas." I find the tension between the imperfection of our systems and how we couldn't function without them fascinating.
A professor of mine told me that in order to make great art, you must travel. Since graduating from university in 2005 I have traveled Canada and South East Asia. Prior to that I have also had the priveledge of studying abroad in Sienna, Italy as well as at the Glasgow School of Art in Scotland. I would say that my travels have heavily influenced my work. |

ART
2003 acrylic paint on canvas 45cm by 25 cm |

It is impossible to go through Art School and not feel the weight of the cannonical tradition. It is hard to separate Art from the gallery context. |
Wilderness
2004 Ink on canvas 4 feet by 8 feet |
|
This piece is a giant woodcut. It is impossible to grow up and study Art in Canada and not know about "The Group of Seven." They are the stars of the Canadian cannon of Art. The design for the pannels in this piece is derrived from several Group of Seven pieces.
It was printed on the largest printing press in North America in North Adams Mass.
The imagery is evocative of one of my favorite poems:
the grand highway
is crowded with
lovers and leavers
and searchers
so eager
to please
and forget.
wilderness.

Can you separate history, authority, pop culture, feminism and your personal life?
2007 mixed media 9 panels of 30.5by 30.5cm |
|
This work melts together painting, drawing and sculpture through the mixing of media. I used acrylic paint, pencil, charcoal, graphite, neocolor crayon, paper, mylar on wod and canvas. The intellectual concepts mirror the process. I am interested in how the categories we impose on the world around us can fail us, yet we are so dependant on them. |
