| About the Artist |
"For the style of Paolo’s works, no matter whether they are painted by the technique of oil painting or using traditional Chinese ink and brush, what is typical is the power of lines, which takes inspiration from the traditional Chinese art of calligraphy. Chinese calligraphy was, in some of its forms, sometimes very close to contemporary abstraction. They are also based on the ancient tradition of the Chinese style of ink painting, where it is the most important not to describe the shape of an object but its inner idea. However, he is not restricted by object, his paintings are pure abstraction. Maybe because Paolo Zhang lives in Europe, the involuntary crossing of the influences of Eastern and Western cultures in his paintings is stronger than in the works of other Chinese abstract painters, who did not leave China. He feels to be concerned with the Western masters of an Abstract expressionism, which were inspired by the Eastern art of calligraphy. Paolo’s paintings demonstrate the Chinese point of view of his own tradition and of the art tradition of the Western world. The expressionism of his lines comes from different base but it is going to the same path – the path of abstraction. "
