|
New York based artist, Paul is an old soul with a new heart. In his words, "I've
been creating art ever since Crayola expanded their selection to 64 colors." Inspired and coached by the late Adirondack artist Ray Jackman, he postponed a career in art to obtain a B.S. in Comp Sci and pursue a technical path. With his family now grown, he has returned to immerse himself in his passion for all things music through an alternate medium, digital art. Inspired by Peter Max’s unfettered use of color and bold lines and Warhol’s selection of hackneyed subject matter, Paul sets out to explore the invisible. Combining vibrant colors and bold lines with distortion and texture, his manipulations encourage viewers to decipher and ultimately to complete his compositions. Through his unique approach, Thatcher provides us with an exceptional perspective on one of his favorite subjects.

Why art, why now. Inspiration is like the common cold, you don’t usually see it coming and then bam it hits you. My interest in art actually preceded my interest in music. To be quite honest I’m a musician foremost but inspiration has had its way with me. So I manage time for both. Initial inspiration for saturated color dates back to attending rock concerts hosting wildly choreographed light shows. When it’s exactly right, I swear I can taste it. Today technology has enabled me to produce an extremely visualodic experience on canvas for others to enjoy. Creating the visual equivalent of a catchy tune intrigues me. The subject matter forms clever lyrics. Thin, bold, curved or jagged lines draw out the melody and tempo. The color palette and texture work together create unforgettable hooks leaving density and contrast to control dynamic flow of the piece.
The universe that I have to draw upon has been developed over the last thirty years. An avid guitarist since the sixth grade, I've played in many rock bands, lived through the British music invasion, spent countless hours gawking at expensive gear in music stores, hung out in bars famous for their musical heritage, and taken on Mr. Cuervo at Maui's Hard Rock Café and won.
Current works include, the British Invasion collection depicting guitars played by the early '60's rock groups that descended upon
the hearts, minds and radios across America. It was a favorite time for me personally. My musical pallet was developing and vulnerable to the intoxicating hooks, licks and grooves of the time. Creating this collection is my way of giving back as well as reviving the memories created by the music of that generation. My generation. Enjoy. |
